Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic condition in which the body becomes resistant to insulin or does not produce enough insulin to maintain normal blood glucose levels. It is the most common form of diabetes.

Type 2 Diabetes

Risk Factors
verweight or obesity
Physical inactivity
Family history of diabetes
Increasing age
High blood pressure
Unhealthy diet
History of gestational diabetes

Common Symptoms

Increased thirst (polydipsia)
Frequent urination (polyuria)
Increased hunger (polyphagia)

Fatigue

Blurred vision
Slow-healing wounds
Recurrent infections
Unexplained weight loss (sometimes)

Diagnosis

Fasting blood glucose ≥ 126 mg/dL (7.0 mmol/L)
HbA1c ≥ 6.5%
Random blood glucose ≥ 200 mg/dL (11.1 mmol/L) with symptoms
Oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT)

Management

1. Lifestyle changes
Healthy diet
Regular exercise
Weight reduction if overweight
Smoking cessation

2. Medications
Metformin is usually the first-line treatment.
Other medications may be added if needed.
3. Monitoring
Regular blood glucose checks
Periodic HbA1c testing
Monitoring for complications

Eye damage (retinopathy)

Nerve damage (neuropathy)
