The biggest barrier to positive change can be your identity conflict
17/07/2026
Practicing a habit for years and then trying to leave it behind is never easy. Over time, our habits become part of our identity.
Sometimes, that identity becomes the biggest obstacle to breaking bad habits and building better ones.
For about three and a half years, I observed a person who transformed from an extremely shy, introverted, and fearful individual into a confident and outgoing one. Watching his journey taught me many valuable lessons.
One lesson, in particular, stood out. Whenever he tried to replace his bad habits with good ones, he repeatedly failed. One day, while reading a book, he came across an idea that perfectly explained his struggle. The problem was identity conflict.
He wanted to become confident and worked hard to achieve it, but deep down, he never saw himself as a confident person. He continued to identify himself as a shy and insecure person. As long as his identity remained the same, his actions kept conflicting with the person he wanted to become.
Real transformation begins when you stop saying, "I want to be confident," and start believing, "I am becoming a confident person." Your habits follow your identity, and lasting change happens when you first change the way you see yourself.
