GPGC Mardan Hosts Sociology Thesis Viva: Spotlight on Research and Growing Department
Government Post Graduate College (GPGC) Mardan recently held a notable Sociology thesis viva, showcasing the dedication and research abilities of its graduating BS Sociology students. The students presented their in-depth studies on pressing social issues, underscoring the growth and importance of Sociology at GPGC Mardan. This event highlighted both the students' hard work and the department's commitment to academic and social development.
The research presentations covered a wide range of topics, each addressing relevant societal challenges. Hammad Muhammad, Ijaz Anwar, Siraj Uddin, and Muhammad Sabir explored the “Effects of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on Students’ Learning” in the context of GPGC Mardan, examining how AI is reshaping educational experiences. Sikandar Khan, Niaz Ali, Asif Khan, and Usman Ghani presented their research on “The Impact of Social Support on Cardiovascular Disease Patients' Experience and Perception,” a topic that reflects growing awareness of mental and social support in health outcomes.
Another research team, led by Hamza Khan, Zulfiqar Ali, Muhammad Shehzad, and Uzair Ali, focused on “The Effect of Marriage on Academic Performance and Attendance Patterns among BS Students in Mardan,” shedding light on how marital responsibilities may impact academic life. Saiful Islam, Shehzad Khan, Sohail ur Rehman, and Muhammad Ilyas presented a “Comparative Analysis of Children’s Socialization in Educated and Uneducated Mothers in District Mardan,” emphasizing the role of parental education in children’s social development. Abdur Rauf, Easa Khan, Fahad Khan, and Shahzad Akbar examined the “Impact of TikTok Usage on Interpersonal Skills of Students in GPGC Mardan,” a study that delves into the effects of social media on personal interactions among young people.
The event was supervised by Dr. Hussain Ali, Assistant Professor of Sociology at Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan, who served as the external examiner. Other prominent attendees included Principal of GPGC Mardan, Professor Muhammad Ibrar Akhundzada, who is also a Professor of Statistics, Controller of Examinations Professor Muhammad Zahir Shah from the Physics Department, and Dr. Jamal Shah, the BS Coordinator and Associate Professor of Political Science. The Sociology faculty team, led by Head of Department Mr. Amjad Ali Khan, was actively involved in organizing and facilitating the event. Other faculty members, including Mr. Muhammad Abdul Basit, Mr. Aurangzeb Khan, Dr. Abid Ali Khan, and Mr. Farooq Shah, contributed to the success of the thesis presentations.
The Department of Sociology at GPGC Mardan was launched in September 2018, with Mr. Amjad Ali Khan as the founding faculty member, and despite early challenges, the department has grown steadily. This event celebrated the third batch of graduating Sociology students, symbolizing a major milestone for the department and the college. Principal Ibrar Akhundzada noted the rising popularity of Sociology, announcing that 100 Intermediate students have enrolled in the Introduction to Sociology course, showing a growing interest in the subject.
This Sociology thesis viva demonstrated not only the academic excellence of GPGC’s students but also the department’s dedication to fostering research that addresses significant social issues. As Sociology continues to expand at GPGC Mardan, it promises to shape a socially aware, research-oriented generation of students, benefiting both the college and the wider community.
