Pakistani Scientist Dr. Naveed Syed Creates History with the World’s First Brain-to-Chip Connection
Dr. Naveed I. Syed a Pakistani-born neuroscientist based at the University of Calgary made scientific history by becoming the first scientist in the world to establish a direct interface between a living brain cell and a silicon chip. This groundbreaking achievement laid the foundation for what is now referred to as the “neuro-chip”, revolutionizing the future of bio-electronic communication.
In the early 2000s Dr. Syed and his team successfully connected individual neurons from the brain to a microelectronic chip, allowing for two-way communication between biological systems and artificial devices. The neurons not only survived on the silicon surface but also established electrical communication with the chip, sending and receiving signals — a major scientific milestone.
