The accepted botanical name for the tree commonly known as the Chinese tallow is Triadica sebifera (L.) Small. It belongs to the spurge family, Euphorbiaceae. Formerly classified under the genera Sapium sebiferum and Stillingia sebifera, it was reclassified into the genus Triadica and is also frequently referred to by the common name popcorn tree

Growing to 10 metres (33 feet), it is a vigorous, deciduous woody vine, notable for its showy trumpet-shaped flowers. It inhabits woodlands and riverbanks, and is also a popular garden plant.
