**Riya: The Hidden Shirk That Can Nullify Good Deeds**
Have you ever wondered whether a good deed can look beautiful on the outside, yet lose its reward because of what is happening inside the heart?
This is the serious danger of **Riya (showing off in worship)**.
Riya means doing a good deed or act of worship so that people will see you, praise you, or think highly of you — instead of seeking the pleasure of Allah alone.
The Prophet ﷺ warned his companions about **minor shirk** and identified Riya as one of its forms.
And the danger is much deeper than many people realize.
Riya can enter:
• Prayer
• Charity
• Islamic knowledge
• Dawah
• Appearance and speech
• Public acts of worship
• Even social media posts about good deeds
The Prophet ﷺ also described three people who performed extremely great deeds — fighting, teaching Islamic knowledge, and giving charity — yet their deeds became a cause of punishment because their intentions were corrupted by the desire for recognition.
But there is an important balance.
**Not every public good deed is Riya.**
A person may give charity publicly to encourage others, or share beneficial Islamic knowledge without seeking personal praise. What matters is the intention behind the action.
So how can we protect ourselves?
🌿 Renew your intention before and during worship.
🌿 Keep some good deeds completely private.
🌿 Give charity anonymously when possible.
🌿 Increase your remembrance of Allah.
🌿 Remember that the approval of people will not matter on the Day of Judgment.
🌿 When a passing thought of showing off enters your heart, don't abandon the good deed. Correct your intention and continue for Allah's sake.
One powerful question to ask yourself is:
**“Would I still do this if nobody ever knew about it?”**
The goal is not to become afraid of every thought or to stop doing good deeds.
The goal is to develop **Ikhlas — sincerity for Allah**.
> فَمَن كَانَ يَرْجُو لِقَاءَ رَبِّهِ فَلْيَعْمَلْ عَمَلًا صَالِحًا وَلَا يُشْرِكْ بِعِبَادَةِ رَبِّهِ أَحَدًا
“So whoever hopes to meet his Lord, let him do righteous work and associate none in the worship of his Lord.”
