The Consultant of the Regional Office Larkana of the Provincial Ombudsman Sindh, Larkana Syed Shakeel Haider, has said that although we have education, women become victims of harassment due to a lack of proper training and character-building.
He said that the students of today are the leaders of tomorrow; therefore, they should not lose courage and must raise their voices against harassment faced by them in educational institutions so that they can obtain justice.
He expressed these views while addressing a seminar titled “Educational Institutions: Providing Education, Training and Character Building”, held today at Government Arts & Commerce College Larkana.
He said that the sanctity and respect of relationships in our society are gradually declining, and therefore it is essential that we respect one another so that the dignity of relationships can be maintained. He further said that human beings may face mental and physical weaknesses in life, and we need to reflect on these issues. If you remain silent and do not raise your voice against harassment faced by you, then we will also be unable to take action, because the Ombudsman institution has been established for the provision of justice.
He urged the students not to be afraid, saying that inquiry committees have been established in institutions where they can raise their voices against harassment and any form of mental pressure and can also lodge complaints. As a result of an inquiry, disciplinary action against an employee found responsible for harassment may include stoppage of increment, suspension and other penalties.
He further said that if an educated person working in a government or semi-government institution harasses a woman, he would be concerned because he would know that he would have to be held accountable for his actions.
He said that complaints against harassment are also filed before the higher courts of Pakistan and justice is provided to the complainants. However, men also often face different forms of harassment and difficulties. For example, in matters relating to buying and selling, delays in the issuance of required documents by institutions and prolonged waiting periods can also cause considerable distress to men. He said that women play a very important role in society. However, in order to obtain justice, it is essential that they remain strong so that their grievances can be addressed and justice can be provided to them. He said that fear is a natural human tendency, due to which people sometimes fail to seek justice in time. Both men and women should therefore develop courage so that they can raise their voices and seek justice.
He said that parents not only provide education to their children but also train them and develop confidence and courage in them. Therefore, students should not be afraid and should raise their voices against any harassment they face.
At the end, a question-and-answer session was also held, during which male and female students asked questions related to the topic and received answers.
On the occasion, Professor Rizwan-ul-Haq Pathan, Principal Government Arts & Commerce College Larkana; Muhammad Aslam Khokhar, Information Officer Larkana; Mansoor Ali Mangi; Abdul Sami Soomro; Ms. Fiza Jakhar and others were also present.
