Benazir Bhutto was one of the most famous Pakistani politicians and the first woman to lead a democratic government in a Muslim majority nation. She served as the Prime Minister of the country twice, from 1988 to 1990, and from 1993 to 1996. Her works, thoughts and ideologies were liberal and secular. From 1980s until her assassination in 2007, she co-chaired the centre-left 'Pakistan Peoples Party' (PPP). She remained a controversial figure and was criticised by opponents as corrupt and politically inexperienced. Her modernising and secular agenda received a lot of opposition from Pakistan’s Islamist lobby. Despite this, she remained popular throughout the country and also received a lot of support from the Western world.
