Title: Integrating older persons’ narratives of resistance with critical discourse analysis to counter ageist discourses
This study examines ageist discourses in Pakistan’s Sindh province, employing an integrated approach that combines observations, narratives, and critical discourse analysis. Observations of participants in real-life settings were used to collect data. Moreover, six narrative interviews with older Sindhi participants were conducted to provide in-depth insights into how ageist discourses are constructed and resisted. The analysis demonstrated two dominant ageist discourses: the discourse of physical decline and the discourse of psychological instability. However, these discourses were countered by integrating participants’ narratives of resistance, highlighting their agency, preferred identities, and healthiness. This study contributes to the understanding of ageism in Sindh and underscores the importance of centering the voices and experiences of older persons in challenging ageist discourses.

From Fixation to Fluidity
Proponents of structuralism, a movement characterized by essentialist approach and ahistorical linguistic analysis, conceptualized language as a system of fixed units of meaning and sound. These units, as they described, were connected to each other and helped structure linguistic binaries. However, post structuralists challenged the idea of fixation of units and binaries as they sought to describe discourse and language as processes constitutive of social and cultural reality. Unlike poststructural critics of Linguistics, generativists argued that language is made of limited universal laws (Universal Grammar). The generativists' concept of linguistic universality was critiqued by cognitivists who postulated how the knowledge of grammar is not inherent but learnt. Cognitive Linguistics is based on the perception that language is made up of cognitive processes.
