Conventional education vs Modern demands - Talha Zafar
Amidst millions of controversies that exist, one of the most pivotal has been the education systems that we have in place today. Many clever minds have identified that the present day education system omits a number of important details and it is outdated. Students are installed with knowledge and information extraction methods that the modern day technology has bypassed flawlessly. A simple example is finding word meanings on the internet or handheld devices as opposed to using a pocket dictionary. Another example is the extreme focus on hand writing and little or no attempt made to enhance typing speed on computer and other everyday devices. The reason I quote this example is because these kids will graduate in a world where official communication is made using these very computers and devices.
So does that make our education system out dated? Well, yes it does! If we trace the origins of the system we have in place today we find that this goes all the way back to the industrial revolution where the establishment of factories and work units required a trained workforce (careful not to use the word skill here). The workers need to follow instructions and there is a supervisor monitoring the workforce. They would come in uniforms and were given no credit for creativity. Now contrast this with a school, the children wear uniforms, creative minds are unwelcome and they are only retaining knowledge instead of working on their skill set. How many businesses were established based on the knowledge of “who built the great wall of china?” The question is wrong instead it should be “why was the wall built in the first place?”.
Modern day business environment and organisations demand a number of skills and a certain frame of mind that the students are not being exposed to. This is where I and many Gurus of the industry push the idea of 21st century education.
21st century education focuses on an interactive learning environment which works on building and nesting the skills of a student. In my opinion the antidote is introducing Innovative practices which may be public speaking, presentations or simply creative art work. Educational institutions need to realise the importance of these and should make the necessary implementations and adopt best practices. As Jack Ma said that we are cultivating youth that will be pushed into an age where machines prevail and humans need to stay one step ahead. A simple remedy for this scary future is enable these young minds to think freely, as this is a task that a machine cannot be trained to perform. I personally believe that the school of thoughts should be altered so that people don’t view these machines as competition but rather means to complete tasks in a timely and orderly manner.
I hope to say or id rather say I have a dream that someday these schools will start producing proactive visionaries and critical analyst rather than robots who await instructions.
