This is Saturn and that almost invisible blue line is its rings. The rings are so mesmerising that people usually forget to actually look at Saturn itself, but in this composite image created by Spanish amateur astronomer Fernando Garcia Navarro we can see that the planet is non-spherical, wider at the equator than the poles – and if you pay close attention, you will also see two of Saturn’s moons.

Contrary to popular belief, light pillars, such as the ones you see in this image, aren’t caused by supernatural events. Light pillars are a natural phenomenon and appear in the night sky when light bounces off flat ice crystals floating close to the ground.
Canadian photographer Jay Callaghan captured this shot near Peterborough, Ontario, last week.

Scientists have identified 180 species of bioluminescent fish and, because they know there are more and can’t swim to the bottom of the ocean to find them, they have built the EXOSUIT, an aluminium alloy diving suit capable of taking a human 304 metres underwater at surface pressure. The EXOSUIT has an oxygen system with 50 hours of life support and LED lights for full visibility.
