Dr. Muhammad Wasim Nawaz, Department of Computer Engineering, The University of Lahore, presented his research paper:
📄 “Multi-class Network Intrusion Detection with Class Imbalance via LSTM & SMOTE”
at the prestigious 27th IEEE HPCC-2025 Conference 🏛️, Exeter, UK.

🔍 Our focus:
Tackling the class imbalance problem ⚖️ in intrusion detection—especially for rare cyber-attack types 🛡️.

💡 Key Techniques Used:
🧠 LSTM → Capturing temporal patterns in network traffic
🔄 SMOTE → Oversampling minority classes for to handle class imbalance
🎯 Categorical Focal Cross-Entropy Loss → Prioritizing hard-to-classify cases

📊 Major Findings:
The combination of SMOTE + Focal Loss dramatically improved minority attack detection on both KDD99 and CICIDS2017 datasets 📈, outperforming existing methods and demonstrating robust detection of network intrusions.
