Do You Know the Difference Between These Two Types of Verbs?
Let’s play a quick game.
Can you answer these questions?
1. What did you write?
2. Who did you annoy?
3. What did you throw?
Easy, right? Maybe you wrote a letter, annoyed your neighbor, or threw a ball.
These are all transitive verbs – they need something (a direct object) to complete their meaning.
Now try these:
4. *What did you sleep?
5. *What did you die?
6. *Who did you arrive?
These sound... wrong, don’t they? That’s because sleep, die, and arrive are intransitive verbs – they don’t act on anything and don’t need a direct object.
Quick Tip:
If a verb needs an object to make sense, it's transitive.
If it makes sense on its own, it's intransitive.
Examples:
I wrote a poem. (Transitive)
She slept peacefully. (Intransitive)
