From January to August 2026, the Environment Protection and Climate Change Department, Government of the Punjab has strengthened environmental enforcement across restaurants, with a focused effort to reduce smoke, fumes, and harmful emissions from commercial kitchens.

A key priority has been ensuring the installation and effective use of suction hoods and proper exhaust systems, helping capture and control cooking smoke and emissions before they affect surrounding communities and the environment.

This initiative reflects EPA Punjab’s commitment to cleaner air, responsible business practices, and stronger environmental compliance. Through inspections, awareness, monitoring, and enforcement, restaurants are being encouraged to adopt practical measures that contribute to a healthier and more sustainable Punjab.

Environmental protection is a shared responsibility, and every restaurant, business, and citizen has a role to play in building a greener, healthier Punjab.

Pakistan is sending emergency relief assistance to Nepal following catastrophic flash floods and landslides that have devastated communities across the Himalayan region. The disaster has claimed more than 500 lives, while thousands remain missing or unaccounted for and more than 90,000 people are in urgent need of assistance.

Nepal is facing one of the most devastating disasters of the year after catastrophic flash floods and landslides struck communities along the Nepal–China Himalayan border on 26 August 2026.

The disaster has already claimed more than 350 lives in Nepal, while hundreds of people remain missing. China has also reported fatalities and hundreds of missing people in Tibet. The numbers continue to change as rescue teams reach areas cut off by mud, debris and destroyed infrastructure.

Many of those missing are believed to be international tourists and pilgrims travelling toward the Mount Kailash–Mansarovar region, with nationals from countries including India, the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, South Korea, the Netherlands, Malaysia, Portugal and South Africa among those reported missing.

Rescue operations are continuing, with helicopters and emergency teams deployed to search through mud and debris, evacuate survivors and deliver essential supplies. Authorities are also warning of the possibility of further flooding because of unstable water and debris-dammed areas upstream.

This tragedy is a painful reminder of the vulnerability of Himalayan communities to glacial hazards, extreme weather and rapidly changing mountain environments.

Our thoughts are with the families who have lost loved ones, those still waiting for news, the injured, the displaced communities, and the brave rescuers working under extremely difficult conditions.

The loss of 14 newborn lives at PIMS Hospital in Islamabad is a devastating tragedy that has left the nation in grief.

A fire that broke out in the Mother and Child Hospital’s nursery in the early hours of August 26 claimed the lives of 14 newborns, while one baby was rescued. The preliminary report indicates that a spark triggered the blaze, which spread rapidly in the presence of oxygen points connected to the incubators.

While the courage and immediate response of doctors, nurses, hospital staff, rescue teams and firefighters helped prevent an even greater loss of life, the tragedy raises serious questions about hospital fire safety, emergency preparedness, oxygen systems, evacuation protocols and accountability.

This tragedy must become a turning point for strengthening fire safety standards, emergency response systems and accountability mechanisms across hospitals throughout Pakistan.

May Allah grant patience and strength to the bereaved families and mercy to the innocent souls who lost their lives.

The world is ageing rapidly. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 1.1 billion people were aged 60 and above in 2023, and this number is projected to reach 1.4 billion by 2030 and 2.1 billion by 2050. By 2030, around one in six people globally will be aged 60 or above. By 2050, approximately 80% of older people will live in low- and middle-income countries.

Pakistan has already explored rights-based measures for senior citizens. A proposed Islamabad Capital Territory Senior Citizens Bill included a Senior Citizens Council, a Senior Citizens Fund, healthcare concessions, separate service counters and other benefits.

𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐑𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦:
✅Legal protection against elder abuse, neglect, financial exploitation and discrimination.
✅Long-term and home-based care systems for seniors who require assistance, supported by trained caregivers.
✅A stronger social protection and pension system, particularly for vulnerable, informal-sector and low-income senior citizens.
✅Opportunities for active ageing, enabling older citizens to mentor youth, contribute to businesses, volunteer and share their professional expertise.
✅Special focus on older women, particularly widows and those without independent income or family support.

Ageing should not be viewed as a burden. It is a demographic transformation and an opportunity. With the right policies, our senior citizens can remain active contributors to families, communities, the economy and national development.

On 14 August 1947, Pakistan emerged as an independent nation after a remarkable political and democratic struggle led by Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, supported by millions of Muslims across the subcontinent.

The journey to Pakistan was not achieved overnight. It was shaped by decades of political awakening, intellectual leadership and collective determination. Allama Muhammad Iqbal’s vision, the leadership of the All-India Muslim League, and Quaid-e-Azam’s unwavering commitment gave direction to the demand for a separate homeland.

📜 1930: Allama Iqbal articulated the vision of a Muslim political homeland in his historic Allahabad Address.

🇵🇰 23 March 1940: The Lahore Resolution, later known as the Pakistan Resolution, gave a decisive political direction to the demand for Muslim-majority regions to have independent and sovereign status.

🗳️ 1946: The Muslim League achieved a decisive electoral mandate in the Muslim constituencies, strengthening its claim to represent the political aspirations of India's Muslims.

📜 3 June 1947: The British Government announced the plan for the transfer of power and partition of British India.

🇵🇰 14 August 1947: Pakistan became independent. The first Constituent Assembly had begun its workdays earlier, meeting on 10 August 1947; Quaid-e-Azam was elected its President on 11 August, while the national flag was formally approved by the Assembly.

Pakistan began with limited resources, enormous administrative challenges and an urgent need to build institutions almost from scratch. Yet its people demonstrated extraordinary resilience.

From a new state struggling to establish itself in 1947 to a nation of more than 240 million people, Pakistan’s story is one of perseverance, sacrifice and resilience.

Our independence is more than a historical date. It is a responsibility to protect democracy, strengthen institutions, empower youth and women, promote economic opportunity, safeguard minorities, protect our environment, and build a Pakistan where every citizen can contribute and prosper.
