Awareness Message | Choba (Weedy Red Rice)

Choba (Weedy Red Rice) is a serious w**d in rice fields of Punjab. Although it belongs to the same species as cultivated rice, it is taller, more competitive, and produces red grains that contaminate harvested rice. Its presence reduces crop yield and grain quality, while contamination above 2% can lead to rejection of premium rice lots in domestic and export markets.

Farmers are advised to prevent the spread of Choba by using certified seed, maintaining field sanitation, following crop rotation, adopting proper water management, and using recommended herbicides judiciously.

Protect your crop. Preserve rice quality. Prevent the spread of Choba.

As part of the Annual Research Work Plan, transplanting of rice breeding lines for drought screening is being carried out at the Rainout Shelter Facility of the Rice Research Institute (RRI).
The experiment follows the IRRI standardized field screening protocol for reproductive-stage drought stress, where rice lines are transplanted under well-watered conditions to ensure uniform crop establishment. At the appropriate growth stage, irrigation is withheld by closing the rainout shelter during rainfall events, allowing drought stress to develop under controlled conditions. Plant performance is then evaluated based on agronomic, physiological, and yield-related traits to identify drought-tolerant genotypes.
The rainout shelter enables precise management of water stress while minimizing the influence of unpredictable rainfall, ensuring reliable and repeatable screening of breeding materials.
This research supports RRI's ongoing efforts to develop climate-resilient rice varieties capable of maintaining productivity under water-limited environments.

Rice Stem Borer in Punjab, Pakistan – Field Awareness Video

Rice stem borer is one of the most destructive insect pests of rice. The larvae bore into the stem, causing dead hearts during the vegetative stage and white heads at the reproductive stage, leading to significant yield losses if not managed in time. Early field scouting and integrated pest management are essential for effective control.

🎥 Video recorded by: Ms. Amara Nasiba (Scientific Officer), Entomology Section, Rice Research Institute (RRI), Kala Shah Kaku (KSK), Punjab, Pakistan.

Please watch, share, and help spread awareness among rice growers for timely identification and management of rice stem borer.

At Rice Research Institute, Kala Shah Kaku (RRI, KSK), modern technologies are strengthening our commitment to delivering high-quality rice research and reliable quality evaluation.

The Kett Near Infrared (NIR) Auto Analyzer is a game-changer in rice quality evaluation, providing rapid, accurate, and non-destructive analysis of important quality parameters such as moisture, protein, and amylose content within minutes. Using advanced Near Infrared (NIR) technology, it eliminates the need for chemicals, complex sample preparation, and time-consuming laboratory procedures, making it ideal for routine testing in rice research institutes and quality control laboratories. Its speed, precision, and ease of operation enable efficient screening of large numbers of rice samples, supporting varietal evaluation, quality assurance, and data-driven decision-making across the rice value chain.

Procedure: The analyzer is switched on and allowed to complete its initialization. Instrument performance is verified by running the standard (reference sample) before sample analysis. A representative 30 g milled rice sample is weighed and transferred into the analyzer cassette, ensuring the surface is leveled evenly without compressing the grains. The cassette is then inserted into the sample chamber, the appropriate rice calibration program is selected, and the sample identification details are entered. The analysis is initiated, during which the instrument automatically measures moisture, protein, and amylose content using Near Infrared (NIR) technology. The results are displayed within a few minutes and are recorded or printed for documentation. After sample analysis, the standard (reference sample for basmati/non basmati) is run again, if required by the laboratory quality control protocol, to verify instrument accuracy. Finally, the cassette and sample chamber are cleaned, and the instrument is switched off and covered to protect it from dust after completion of the analysis.

This video demonstrates the operation of the Kett NIR Auto Analyzer and was presented by Mr. Mohsin Ali Raza, Senior Scientist (Food Technology), Rice Research Institute, Kala Shah Kaku.
