قدیم ہندؤوں میں کوئی بیوپاری اگر کنگال ہو جاتا اور اپنے قرض ادا نہ کرسکتا تو وہ اپنے دکان کے آگے ایک دن صبح سویرے دو دیے جلا کر رکھ دیتا جس سے دوسرے بیوپاری اور لوگ سمجھ جاتے کہ یہ شخص کنگال ہو چکا ہے ہمدردی کے تحت دوسرے بیوپاری چند دن اپنے دکانیں بند کر لیتے تاکہ گاہک ان کی طرف متوجہ ہوں اور ان کی نقد امداد بھی کرد یتے تھے ۔۔

لفظ دیوالیہ دو دیے سے ہی نکلا ہے (دو دیوں والا) چنیوٹ صرافہ بازار میں دیے رکھنے کے نشانات آج بھی پرانے دکانوں میں موجود ہیں۔۔۔
