As someone who loves doing creative writing activities with kids, and training teachers on how to teach English to young learners, my biggest gripe is when parents and teachers expect creative writing to be some sort of 'perfect' combination of spelling, grammar and ideas.

Creative writing should be an opportunity for a child to use whatever form of expression s/he wants, to put thoughts to paper - this could be scribbles, drawings, phonetic sounds or broken sentences, instead of prescriptive patterns of thought which limit creativity and imagination because kids are too afraid to make a 'mistake'.

I appeal to all parents and educators to allow children to explore their creativity and cherish the little 'imperfections' in their work as it is these moments that will not only form your most precious memories but also allow for the most long lasting learning.
