In September 1955, regular MA classes were started in the Department of Sociology. From then on, the Department of Sociology has progressed well and is presently running 10 different academic programmes and the number of students has risen from 35 in 1955 to 100 in 2001 and to more than 750 in 2008. A landmark achievement of the Department was on December5, 2006, when at the ceremony of the new building for the Department, it was upgraded to an Institute of Social and Cultural Studies.
