Today's lesson
Are you 'down to earth'?
Someone who is realistic and approaches life in a manner that is balanced and practical can be called 'down to earth.'
'She had a down to earth attitude and that is what made her such a successful manager.'
We often use this phrase to describe someone who is famous or has achieved something of note but remains normal, just like an everyday person.

Lesson of today
Bite the bullet / By the skin of your teeth
To ‘bite the bullet’ means to force yourself to do something unpleasant or difficult.
‘I hate going to the dentist but I will just have to bite the bullet.’
‘He finds it very challenging to learn English but he will just have to bite the bullet.’
If you do something by the ‘skin of your teeth’, you narrowly escape disaster. It has the same meaning as ‘narrowly’ and ‘barely’.
‘They held on to the lead by the skin of their teeth.’
‘He passed his English exam by the skin of his teeth.’

If: First conditional
We use the first conditional to talk about events in the future that are likely to happen.
Imagine this situation:
You are at home.
There are rain clouds in the sky but it is not raining.
You plan to play tennis later.
You could say:
‘If it rains, I will not play tennis’.
If + present simple + will + infinitive
We can also place the ‘if’ in the middle to mean the same thing:
‘I will not play tennis if it rains’.
