The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a voluntary recall of thousands of bottles of Duloxetine delayed-release capsules after laboratory testing identified the possible presence of elevated levels of a nitrosamine impurity, a class of chemical compounds that may increase cancer risk with prolonged exposure.
Duloxetine is a commonly prescribed medication used for the treatment of depression, anxiety disorders, diabetic neuropathy, and certain chronic pain conditions. While the medication itself remains widely considered safe and effective when manufactured under regulated conditions, the current concern arises from contamination during the manufacturing process, which led to impurity levels exceeding the acceptable safety limits set by regulatory authorities.
According to the FDA, this recall is being carried out as a precautionary measure to protect public health. Patients currently taking Duloxetine are strongly advised not to stop their medication abruptly, as sudden discontinuation may lead to withdrawal symptoms or worsening of their underlying condition. Instead, individuals should consult their healthcare provider or pharmacist for appropriate medical guidance and safe alternatives if necessary.
Regulatory agencies continue to monitor pharmaceutical manufacturing standards closely to ensure compliance with safety guidelines and to minimize the risk of contamination in approved medications.
