THE + consonsant sound = /ðə/ THE + vowel sound = /ðiː/ Focus on the sound, not the letter so much. For instance, these words all start with consonant sounds, not vowel sounds: - university - European Union so would use THE /ðə/ while these words start with vowel sounds: - the honest man - the umbrella - the EU so would use THE /ðiː/ If you want to emphasise a word you can use /ðiː/ for words that start with either a consonant or vowel sound
