Punjab University Readers’ Society (PURS) organized its 185th Book Club Session via Google Meet.

The session was graced by Mr. Shams Siyal, a BS Sociology student at Punjab University, who led the discussion on Tilak Devasher’s book “The Pashtuns: A Contested History.”

The discussion examined the historical evolution of the Pashtun people, tracing their political identity, nationalism, and regional impact. The speaker covered key historical transitions, from Ahmad Shah Abdali’s rise in 1747 through British colonial expansion and the Durand Line to the post-1947 developments shaping the contemporary Pashtun context.

The session also highlighted how these historical shifts continue to influence Pashtun identity, politics, and regional dynamics in the present day.

The session concluded with an engaging Q&A, making the discussion insightful for all participants.

Punjab University Readers’ Society (PURS) organized its 184th Book Club Session via Google Meet.

The session was graced by Mr. Usman Ali, a BS Political Science student at GCU Lahore, who led the discussion on Andrew Heywood’s book “Political Ideologies: An Introduction.”

The discussion explored the core ideas and political implications of Socialism, Communism, and Capitalism, with particular focus on their geopolitical rivalry during and after the Cold War. The speaker examined how these competing ideologies shaped the political, economic, and social trajectories of Third World countries, with references to Afghanistan, Iraq, Cuba, Vietnam, and Pakistan.

The session also highlighted the contemporary relevance of these ideologies in shaping debates on democracy, equality, economic systems, individual liberty, and the role of the state.

The session concluded with an engaging Q&A, making the discussion insightful for all participants.

پنجاب یونیورسٹی ریڈرز سوسائٹی کی 183ویں نشست میں گورنمنٹ کالج، بھوانہ، چنیوٹ سے پولیٹیکل سائنس کے طالب علم کاشف علی نے امریکی مفکر و فلسفی "ول ڈیورانٹ" کی کتاب "تہذیب کی کہانی" کی پہلی جلد "ہمارا مشرقی ورثہ" پر سیر حاصل گفتگو کی۔

نشست میں تہذیب کے اجزائے ترکیبی، ابتدائی عناصر اور بنیادی جہتوں پر تفصیلی بحث ہوئی جن سے کسی بھی تہذیب کا آغاز ممکن ہوتا ہے۔ اس کے ساتھ تہذیب کے سیاسی اور مادی حالات کا بھی جامع جائزہ پیش کیا گیا۔

سیاست، قانون، معیشت اور حکومت جیسے بنیادی اداروں پر بھی روشنی ڈالی گئی اور واضح کیا گیا کہ ان اداروں نے کس طرح تہذیب کے فروغ میں کردار ادا کیا اور وقت کے ساتھ عوام الناس پر ان کے کیا اثرات مرتب ہوئے

حسبِ روایت نشست کے اختتام پر سوالات و جوابات کا سیشن منعقد ہوا جس نے محفل کو علمی و فکری اعتبار سے مزید پُراثر اور بامعنی بنا دیا۔

اس نشست میں گورنمنٹ گریجویٹ کالج، بھوانہ، ضلع چنیوٹ سے پولیٹیکل سائنس کے گریجویٹ، مسٹر کاشف علی، مشہور امریکی مؤرخ اور فلسفی ول ڈیورانٹ (Will Durant) کی شہرۂ آفاق گیارہ جلدوں پر مشتمل سیریز "The Story of Civilization" کی پہلی جلد "Our Oriental Heritage" کے اردو ترجمے "تہذیب کی کہانی: ہمارا مشرقی ورثہ" پر گفتگو کریں گے۔

یہ کتاب انسانی تاریخ، بالخصوص مشرق کی قدیم تہذیبوں کے عروج و زوال، ان کی ثقافت، فلسفہ، مذاہب اور سائنسی ترقی کا جامع اور مستند جائزہ پیش کرتی ہے۔ اس تصنیف کا اردو ترجمہ معروف مترجم یاسر جواد نے کیا ہے۔

پنجاب یونیورسٹی ریڈرز سوسائٹی کی 182ویں نشست میں انقلابی کمیونسٹ پارٹی کے رکن ثناء اللہ جلبانی نے یاسر ارشاد کی کتاب "کشمیر کی آزادی: ایک سوشلسٹ حل" پر تفصیلی گفتگو کی۔ اس سیشن میں کشمیر کی موجودہ صورتحال، کشمیری عوام کی دہائیوں پر محیط جدوجہد، شہادتوں، مزاحمت، احتجاج اور اپنے بنیادی حقوق کے حصول کے لیے دی جانے والی مسلسل قربانیوں کو مختلف تاریخی اور سیاسی تناظر میں زیرِ بحث لایا گیا۔

گفتگو کے دوران عالمی برادری اور عالمی نظام (World Order) کی ذمہ داری پر بھی بات کی گئی کہ وہ کشمیر کے مسئلے کے پائیدار اور منصفانہ حل کے لیے مؤثر کردار ادا کرے۔ اس کے ساتھ بھارت کے کردار، مختلف عوامی تحریکوں، سیاسی جماعتوں، حکمران اشرافیہ، فوجی اشرافیہ اور ریاستی اداروں کے کردار کا بھی تنقیدی جائزہ پیش کیا گیا۔

کتاب میں پیش کیے گئے مؤقف کے مطابق کشمیر کا مسئلہ محض ایک سرحدی تنازع نہیں بلکہ عوام کے حقِ خود ارادیت اور سماجی و معاشی انصاف کا مسئلہ بھی ہے۔ مصنف کے نزدیک ایک پائیدار حل اس وقت ممکن ہے جب کشمیری عوام کو اپنے مستقبل کا فیصلہ خود کرنے کا حق حاصل ہو، اور خطے میں قومیت، مذہب یا ریاستی مفادات کے بجائے عوامی مفادات، جمہوری حقوق اور سماجی برابری کو بنیاد بنایا جائے۔ کتاب ایک ایسے سوشلسٹ نقطۂ نظر کی حمایت کرتی ہے جس میں خطے کے محنت کش عوام کی یکجہتی اور استحصالی نظام کے خاتمے کو دیرپا امن کی بنیاد قرار دیا گیا ہے۔

نشست کا اختتام سوالات و جوابات پر ہوا جو شرکاء کے لیے کشمیر کے تاریخی، سیاسی اور سماجی پہلوؤں کو سمجھنے میں مددگار ثابت ہوا ۔

Punjab University Readers' Society (PURS) organized its 181st Book Club Session via Google Meet.

The session was graced by the presence of Mr. Farah Adeed, a PhD Scholar in Political Science at Boston University, USA.
Mr. Farah Adeed led the discussion on his article published in the Dawn newspaper, titled "AI and the Gatekeepers of the Word."

The session explored the politics of knowledge and the transformative impact of Artificial Intelligence on society, education, communication, and human thinking. The speaker discussed how technological advancements influence social structures, institutions, and even religious and cultural practices.
Mr. Farah Adeed highlighted both the opportunities and challenges presented by AI, examining concerns related to unemployment, economic inequality, and the growing influence of technology on human productivity. He also emphasized AI's potential to create new avenues for learning, creativity, and critical thinking.

The discussion further addressed the future of AI, its role in universities, and its impact on knowledge production.

This Sunday, *Mr. Farah Adeed,* PhD Candidate in Political Science at Boston University, USA, will lead a discussion on his Dawn article "AI and the Gatekeepers of the Word," co-authored with Dr. Zubair Abbasi.

The article explores how Artificial Intelligence is transforming human cognition, writing, and critical thinking. It also reviews the historical role of writing and oral traditions, challenging the assumption that writing is the only path to deep intellectual thought.

Dr. Farah Adeed earned an M.A. in Political Science from San Diego State University and holds both an M.Phil. and a B.S. in Political Science and Sociology from the University of the Punjab, Lahore.
