Why Writing Practice Is the Decisive Factor in CSS Success

Students are often apprehensive about writing even after understanding the fundamentals, and they frequently demonstrate reluctance toward the process of refinement. You must keep this point in mind: most candidates remain excessively focused on the final polished version they wish to produce before the examination. Rarely do they discuss the process itself — the first day, the first week, or the first month of development. Even toppers began with difficulties. Many initially struggled to construct coherent sentences. Therefore, the most important step is simply to begin.
I still remember that I once aspired to become a columnist. I wrote several columns and submitted them to newspapers, but they were not published. Initially, I faced rejection, and in reality, every writer and columnist encounters rejection at some stage of intellectual development. Rejection essentially indicates the existence of shortcomings that require rectification and improvement. Similarly, in CSS — particularly in English papers — your linguistic expression, vocabulary, grammatical accuracy, structural coherence and intellectual maturity evolve only through consistent writing practice.

When you write and attempt to rectify your mistakes — either through self-assessment or professional mentorship — you gradually undergo intellectual and analytical refinement. This transformation is not instantaneous; it is a gradual evolutionary process. You commit mistakes, identify them, control them and eventually refine your expression and reasoning.

During my brief teaching experience at universities, I observed that students are often awarded passing marks without producing properly structured and analytically sound answers. However, CSS is fundamentally different. It is an intensely competitive examination in which only around 200 to 300 candidates are selected from thousands of aspirants. This is precisely where the real competition begins.

Therefore, candidates must initiate writing practice as early as possible. In papers such as English Essay and Precis & Composition, writing constitutes your first intellectual interaction with the examiner. These papers form the foundation of your entire preparation. You should dedicate a limited period to understanding the fundamentals — ideally 10 days and, at maximum, 20 days. Beyond that stage, you must immediately transition from passive learning to active writing practice.
Write continuously. Make mistakes. Refine yourself systematically.

Merely reading books and accumulating information cannot ensure success in CSS. Since all twelve papers are evaluated through written expression, the ability to articulate knowledge effectively is often as important as possessing knowledge itself. The more you write, the more critical feedback you receive; the more feedback you receive, the greater your refinement becomes; and the greater your refinement, the stronger your performance in the final examination.

Suppose a candidate acquires extensive knowledge regarding essay writing, précis, International Relations, Pakistan Affairs, Current Affairs, or Islamic History, yet never practices writing. On the day of the examination, such a candidate may misrepresent their knowledge due to weak articulation, poor structural organization, lack of coherence and ineffective argumentation. Their answer may appear fragmented, structurally deficient, and intellectually unconvincing. Consequently, despite possessing substantial knowledge, they may still secure only 10 to 20 marks and ultimately fail the paper.

Nur al-Din, the Turkish ruler of Aleppo and Damascus, was instrumental in uniting the Muslim Near East against the Crusaders. He inherited territories from his father, Zangi, and initially had a tumultuous relationship with his brother, Sayf al-Din.

After defeating the Franks in Edessa and forming strategic alliances, he expanded his power, successfully capturing Damascus in 1154. His encompassment of Muslim Syria was marked by significant military campaigns against both Crusaders and rival Muslim factions, including alliances with the Byzantine Empire.

Despite experiencing some military challenges, his strategic acumen allowed him to maintain control over his territories until his death in 1174.

Assessments of Nur al-Din's motives vacillate between genuine religious zeal and political ambition, yet he is celebrated as a holy warrior; his tomb in Damascus epitomizes his enduring legacy.

Additionally, Nur ad-Din Zangi is remembered for defending Medina in 557 AH (1164 CE), where he thwarted a plot by Christian agents disguised as pilgrims, who aimed to steal the Prophet Muhammad's (PBUH ) body.

Following a prophetic dream that urged him to protect the grave, Zangi confronted and executed the infiltrators, subsequently creating a protective trench filled with molten lead.

His reign from 1146 to 1174 solidified his status as a key figure in the Crusades, contrasting with the legacy of Fahreddin Pasha, who defended Medina in the 20th century.
