PHRASE-8:

Such being the nature and promise of the universe, what is the nature of man whom it confronts on all sides? Endowed with a most suitable mutual adjustment of faculties he discovers himself down below in the scale of life, surrounded on all sides by the forces of obstruction:
"That of goodliest fabric We created man, then brought him down to the lowest of the low." (95: 4-5)
And how do we find him in this environment? A "restless"* being engrossed in his ideals to the point of forgetting everything else, capable of inflicting pain on himself in his ceaseless quest after fresh scopes for self-expression. With all his failings he is superior to Nature, inasmuch as he carries within him a great trust which, in the words of the Qur'an, the heavens and the earth and the mountains refused to carry:
"Verily We proposed to the Heavens and to the earth and to the mountains to receive the trust (of personality), but they refused the burden and they feared to receive it. Man alone undertook to bear it, but hath proved unjust, senseless!" (33: 72)

*Reference is to the Qur'anic verse 70: 19 which says: "Man has been
created restless (halii'an)."

کائنات کی اس نوعیت کے پیشِ نظر جس نے انسان کو ہر طرف سے گھیر رکھا ہے، خود انسان کی اپنی حقیقت کیا ہے؟ متوازن اہلیتیں رکھنے کے باوجود بھی وہ زندگی کے درجات میں خود کو بہت کمتر پاتا ہے۔ اسے ہر طرف سے رکاوٹوں کا سامنا ہے:
"ہم نے انسان کو اعلیٰ صورت پر پیدا کیا۔ پھر اسے پستیوں میں لڑھکا دیا۔" (95:4)
ہم انسان کو اس ماحول میں کیسا دیکھتے ہیں؟ وہ ایک ایسی بے سکون روح ہے جو اپنے مدعا کو پانے لیے ہر شے کو بھول جاتی ہے اور اپنے اظہار کے لیے نۓ نۓ موقعوں کی تلاش میں ہر دکھ درد سہہ جاتی ہے۔ اپنی تمام تر کوتاہیوں کے باوصف وہ فطرت پر برتری رکھتا ہے۔ وہ ایک بارِ امانت کا امین ہے جسے قرآن کے الفاظ میں آسمانوں، زمین اور پہاڑوں نے اٹھانے سے معذوری ظاہر کر دی تھی:
"ہم نے یہ امانت آسمانوں، زمین اور پہاڑوں کو سونپنا چاہی۔ مگر انہوں نے اس کو اٹھانے سے معذوری ظاہر کر دی۔ اس بارِ امانت کو انسان نے قبول کر لیا۔ بےشک انسان بڑا ظالم اور جلدباز ہے۔" (33:72)

PHRASE-7:

In fact, this mysterious swing and impulse of the universe, this noiseless swim of time which appears to us, human beings, the movement of day and night, is regarded by the Qur'an as one of the greatest signs of God:
"God causeth the day and the night to take their turn. Verily in this is teaching for men of insight." (24: 44)
This is why the Prophet said: "Do not vilify time, for time is God."* And this immensity of time and space carries in it the promise of a complete subjugation by man whose duty is to reflect on the signs of God, and thus discover the means of realizing his conquest of Nature as an actual fact:
"See ye not how God hath put under you all that is in the Heavens,
and all that is on the earth, and hath been bounteous to you of His
favours both in relation to the seen and the unseen?" (31: 20)
"And He hath subjected to you the night and the day, the sun and
the moon, and the stars too are subject to you by His behest; verily
in this are signs for those who understand." (16: 12)

In an exceedingly important section captioned AI-Waqtu Saifun (Time is a Sword) of his celebrated Asrär-i Khudï (Secrets of the Self), Allama Iqbal has referred to the above hadïth thus:
زندگی از دہر و دہر از زندگی است
"لا تسبّوا الدّھر" فرمانِ نبی است
Life is of Time and Time is of Life;
'Do not abuse Time!' was the command of the Prophet. (trans. Nicholson)

حقیقت تو یہ ہے کہ کائنات کی یہ پراسرار جنبش و حرکت، دن اور رات کے آنے جانے میں نظر آنے والے وقت کا یہ بے آواز سلسلہ، خود قرآن حکیم کے نزدیک اللّٰہ کی عظیم ترین نشانیوں میں سے ہے:
"خدا دن کو رات میں اور رات کو دن میں تبدیلی کرتا رہتا ہے۔ اس میں دیکھنے والوں کے لیے بڑی عبرت ہے۔" (24:44)
یہی وجہ ہے کہ حضور صلی اللّٰہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا "زمانے کو برا مت کہو کیونکہ زمانہ تو خود خدا ہے۔" زمان و مکان کی یہ فراخی انسان کے سامنے مسخر ہونے کے لیے سرافگندہ ہے۔ اب یہ انسان کا فرض ہے کہ وہ خدا کی ان نشانیوں کو سمجھے اور ایسے ذرائع ڈھونڈ نکالے جن کی بدولت وہ کائنات کو حقیقتاً مسخر کر لے:
"کیا تم نہیں دیکھتے کہ خدا نے تمہارے لئے مسخر کر دیا جو کچھ آسمانوں میں ہے اور جو کچھ زمین میں ہے۔ اور عام کردی ہیں اس نے تم پر ہر قسم کی نعمتیں، ظاہری بھی اور باطنی بھی۔" (20:31)
"اور اللّٰہ تعالٰی نے مسخر فرما دیا تمہارے لئے رات، دن، سورج اور چاند کو، اور تمام ستارے بھی اس کے حکم کے پابند ہیں۔ بےشک ان تمام چیزوں میں نشانیاں ہیں اس قوم کے لیے جو دانشمند ہے۔" (16:12)

Phrase-6

What, then, according to the Qur'an, is the character of the universe which we inhabit? In the first place, it is not the result of a mere creative sport:
"We have not created the Heavens and the earth and whatever is between them in sport. We have not created them but for a serious end: but the greater part of them understand it not."
(44: 38-39)
It is a reality to be reckoned with:
"Verily in the creation of the Heavens and of the earth, and in the succession of the night and of the day, are signs for men of understanding; who, standing and sitting and reclining, bear God in mind and reflect on the creation of the Heavens and of the earth, and say: "Oh, our Lord! Thou hast not created this in vain.”
(3: 190- 91)

قرآن کی نظر میں اس کائنات کی ماہیت کیا ہے، جس میں ہم رہتے ہیں؟ اوّلاً یہ کہ کائنات کی تخلیق کھیل تماشا نہیں:
"ہم نے آسمانوں اور زمین کو اور ان کے اندر جو کچھ ہے، محض کھیل تماشے کے طور پر تخلیق نہیں کیا۔ ہم نے ان کو ایک نہایت سنجیدہ مقصد کے لیے پیدا کیا ہے۔ مگر زیادہ تر لوگ اس کا شعور نہیں رکھتے۔"
(44: 38-39)
یہ ایک ایسی حقیقت ہے جس کا اعتراف ناگزیر ہے:
"بےشک آسمانوں اور زمین کے پیدا کرنے میں اور رات اور دن کے بدلتے رہنے میں بڑی نشانیاں ہیں اہلِ عقل کے لیے؛ وہ عقلمند جو یاد کرتے رہتے ہیں اللّٰہ تعالٰی کو کھڑے ہوئے اور بیٹھے ہوئے اور پہلوؤں پر لیٹے ہوئے اور غور کرتے رہتے ہیں آسمانوں اور زمین کی پیدائش میں (اور تسلیم کرتے ہیں:) اے ہمارے مالک! نہیں پیدا فرمایا تو نے یہ (کارخانۂ حیات) بے کار۔"
(3: 190-91)

Phrase-5:

With Islam the ideal and the real are not two opposing forces which cannot be reconciled. The life of the ideal consists, not in a total breach with the real which would tend to shatter the organic wholeness of life into painful oppositions, but in the perpetual endeavor of the ideal to appropriate the real with a view eventually to absorb it, to convert it into itself and illuminate its whole being. It is the sharp opposition between the subject and the object, the mathematical without and the biological within, that impressed Christianity. Islam, however, faces the opposition with a view to overcome it.* This essential difference in looking at a fundamental relation determines the respective attitudes of these great religions towards the problem of human life in its present surroundings. Both demand the affirmation of the spiritual self in man, with this difference only that Islam, recognizing the contact of the ideal with the real, says "yes" to the world of matter and points the way to master it with a view to discover a basis for a realistic regulation of life.

اسلام میں عین اور حقیقت، دو غیر تطابق پذیر مخالف قوّتیں نہیں۔ عین کی حیثیت کا انحصار حقیقت سے مکمل لاتعلقی پر نہیں کیونکہ اس سے زندگی کی عُضوی کُلّیت اذیت ناک اضداد میں بٹ جاۓ گی۔ بلکہ اس کا مدار حقیقت کے عین کے اندر پیہم انجذاب و ادغام میں ہے تاکہ اس کا وجودِ کُلّی عینیت سے مستنیر ہو سکے۔ موضوع اور معروض، ریاضیاتی خارج اور حیاتیاتی باطن میں موجود اس اختلاف نے عیسائیت کو متاثر کیا۔ مگر اسلام نے اس کو زیر کرنے کے لیے اس کا سامنا کیا۔ آج کی صورتِ حال میں انسانی مسئلے سے متعلق بنیادی رویے کے تعین کے بارے میں ان دو بڑے مذاہب کے نقطۂ نظر میں یہی بنیادی فرق ہے۔ دونوں انسان کے نفسِ رُوحانی کا اثبات چاہتے ہیں، مگر اسلام کے نقطۂ نظر میں صرف اس قدر فرق ہے کہ وہ عین اور حقیقت کے باہمی تعلق کی بنا پر مادی دنیا سے انسانی تعلق کا اثبات کرتا ہے اور اس کی تسخیر کے راستے کی نشاندہی کرتا ہے جس پر چل کر ہم زندگی کو حقیقت پسندانہ بنیادوں پر استوار کر سکیں۔

PHASE-4:

The problem of Islam was really suggested by the mutual conflict, and at the same time mutual attraction, presented by the two forces of religion and civilization. The same problem confronted early Christianity. The great point in Christianity is the search for an independent content for spiritual life which, according to the insight of its founder, could be elevated, not by the forces of a world external to the soul of man, but by the revelation of a new world within his soul. Islam fully agrees with this insight and supplements it by the further insight that the illumination of the new world thus revealed is not something foreign to the world of matter but permeates it through and through.

حقیقت یہ ہے کہ اسلام کا مسئلہ مذہب اور تہذیب کی دو قوّتوں کا پیدا کردہ ہے جو باہم کھچاؤ اور ساتھ ہی آپس میں لگاؤ رکھنے والی ہیں۔ اسی طرح کا مسئلہ مسیحیت کو بھی ابتدائی دور میں درپیش تھا۔ مسیحیت کا بنیادی سوال یہ تھا کہ روحانی زندگی کے لیے کسی ایسے مستقل اساسی جوہر کو تلاش کیا جاۓ جو حضرت مسیح علیہ السّلام کی بصیرت کے مطابق بیرونی دنیا کی قوّتوں کا آفریدہ نہیں بلکہ خود انسان کے اندر روح کے اپنے انکشافات سے عبارت ہے۔ اسلام کو اس بصیرت سے پورا اتفاق ہے مگر وہ اس میں اس قدر اضافہ کرتا ہے کہ اس نۓ عالم کی دریافت عالم مادی سے بیگانہ نہیں بلکہ اس کے رگ و پے میں جاری و ساری ہے۔

PHRASE-3:

The main purpose of the Qur'an is to awaken in man the higher consciousness of his manifold relations with God and the universe. It is in view of this essential aspect of the Qur'anic teaching that Goethe, while making a general review of Islam as an educational force, said to Eckermann: "You see this teaching never fails; with all our systems, we cannot go, and generally speaking no man can go, farther than that*."

قرآن حکیم کا بنیادی مقصد یہ ہے کہ وہ خدا اور کائنات سے انسان کے مختلف الجہات روابط کا بلند تر شعور اجاگر کرے۔ قرآنی تعلیمات کے اس اساسی پہلو کے پیش نظر ہی گوئٹے نے، اسلام پر بحیثیت ایک تعلیمی قوّت کے بات کرتے ہوۓ ایکرمن سے کہا تھا "دیکھو! یہ تعلیم کبھی نامراد نہیں ٹھہرے گی۔ ہمارا کوئی نظام بلکہ کوئی بھی انسان اس سے آگے نہیں جا سکے گا۔"

PHRASE-2:

The extension of man's power over Nature has given him a new faith and a fresh sense of superiority over the forces that constitute his environment. New points of view have been suggested, old problems have been restated in the light of fresh experience, and new problems have arisen. It seems as if the intellect of man is outgrowing its own most fundamental categories - Time, Space, and Causality. With the advance of scientific thought even our concept of intelligibility is undergoing a change.* The theory of Einstein has brought a new vision of the universe and suggests new ways of looking at the problems common to both religion and philosophy. No wonder then that the younger generation of Islam in Asia and Africa demand a fresh orientation of their faith. With the reawakening of Islam, therefore, it is necessary to examine, in an independent spirit, what Europe has thought and how far the conclusions reached by her can help us in the revision and, if necessary, reconstruction, of theological thought in Islam.

ماحول اور کائنات پر اختیار اور فطرت کی قوّتوں پر برتری نے انسان کو ایک نۓ اعتماد سے سرشار کیا ہے۔ نۓ نۓ نقطہ ہاۓ نظر وجود میں آۓ ہیں۔ نت نۓ تجربات کی روشنی میں پرانے مسائل کو نۓ انداز سے پیش کیا گیا ہے۔ کئی نۓ مسائل نے جنم لیا ہے۔ یوں نظر آتا ہے جیسے انسانی عقل، زمان و مکاں اور علّت و معلول کی خود اپنی حدود پھلانگنے کو ہے۔ سائنسی فکر کی ترقّی کے ساتھ علم و ادراک کے ہمارے تصوّر میں بھی تبدیلی پیدا ہو رہی ہے۔ آئن سٹائین کے نظریہ اضافیت سے کائنات کے بارے میں نیا رویّہ سامنے آیا ہے اور یہ اس بات کا مقتضی ہے کہ مذہب اور فلسفے کے درمیان مشترک مسائل پر نۓ زاویوں سے غور کیا جاۓ۔ اب اگر ایشیاء اور افریقہ میں مسلمانوں کی نوجوان نسل اسلام کی نئی تعبیر چاہتی ہے تو یہ کوئی زیادہ تعجّب خیز بات نہیں۔ تاہم مسلمانوں کی بیداری کے اس عہد میں ہمیں آزادانہ طور پر یہ تجزیہ کرنا چاہئیے کہ یورپ نے کیا سوچا ہے اور جن نتائج تک وہ پہنچا ہے ان سے ہمیں اسلام کی الہیاتی فکر پر نظر ثانی کرنے یا اگر ضروری ہو تو اس کی تشکیل نو کرنے میں کیا مدد مل سکتی ہے۔
