Friday's Special Hour for Answered Prayers

On the authority of Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him), the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Indeed, on Friday there is an hour in which no Muslim stands praying and asking Allah for good except that He gives it to him."

Shaykh Ibn Baz (may Allah have mercy on him) emphasized that the last part of Friday, from Asr prayer until sunset, is a prime time for answered prayers. It's recommended to stay in a state of purity and wait for the Maghrib prayer, increasing supplications during this blessed period.

Whether in the masjid or at home, use this time to sincerely call upon Allah, showing humility and devotion. Begin your duas with praise for Allah and sending blessings upon the Prophet (peace be upon him) to increase the chances of your prayers being accepted.

Path to Attaining A Life Where the Heart is Alive

1. Shortening of Hopes [قصر الأمل]

Opposite of طول الأمل (long hopes), this means living with the constant awareness that life is short and time to please Allah is limited. Even if one has a hundred years, they view it as insufficient for worshiping Allah. They live like a wayfarer, as described by Ibn Qayyim. Constantly reminding oneself of this reality is crucial:

﴿كَأَنَّهُمْ يَوْمَ يَرَوْنَ مَا يُوعَدُونَ لَمْ يَلْبَثُوا إِلَّا سَاعَةً مِنْ نَهَارٍ بَلَاغٌ فَهَلْ يُهْلَكُ إِلَّا الْقَوْمُ الْفَاسِقُونَ﴾ [الأحقاف: ٣٥]

"It will be - on the Day they see that which they are promised - as though they had not remained [in the world] except an hour of a day. [This is] notification. And will [any] be destroyed except the defiantly disobedient people?"

2. Tadabbur of the Quran [وتدبر القرآن]

Tadabbur is not merely the study of Tafsir (interpretation) of the Quran. It involves deeply reflecting upon and internalizing the verses, applying them to one's heart repeatedly with immense focus. This process is best done in solitude. Memorizing and reciting specific portions of the Quran with focus helps in achieving this:

﴿كِتَابٌ أَنْزَلْنَاهُ إِلَيْكَ مُبَارَكٌ لِيَدَّبَّرُوا آيَاتِهِ وَلِيَتَذَكَّرَ أُولُو الْأَلْبَابِ﴾ [ص: ٢٩]

"[This is] a blessed Book which We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], that they might reflect upon its verses and that those of understanding would be reminded."

3. Avoiding What Harms the Heart [وتجنب مفسدات القلب]

To attain Allah’s pleasure, a pure heart is essential:

﴿يَوْمَ لَا يَنفَعُ مَالٌ وَلَا بَنُونَ ‎إِلَّا مَنْ أَتَى اللَّهَ بِقَلْبٍ سَلِيمٍ﴾ [الشعراء: ٨٨-٨٩]

"The Day when there will not benefit [anyone] wealth or children. But only one who comes to Allah with a sound heart."

The major corrupters of the heart include:

(a) Excessive socialization [كثرة الخلطة]: Even with good people, it can distract from time spent with Allah.
(b) Wishful thinking [التمني]: Always thinking about the dunya with greed is harmful.
(c) Attachment to other than Allah [التعلق بغير الله]: Having hopes in others should be conditional upon Allah’s will.
(d) Excessive eating [كثرة الشبع]: Hunger helps in connecting with Allah.
(e) Excessive sleeping [كثرة النوم]: This is often linked to excessive eating and leads to laziness in worship.

People with low ability, knowledge, or experience in a particular area overestimate their competence, while those with high ability may underestimate their competence.

Peak of "Mount Stupid": At the beginning, with very little knowledge or experience, individuals' confidence is at its highest. They are unaware of how much they don't know.

Valley of Despair: As individuals gain a bit more knowledge and experience, their confidence drops sharply. They start to realize the complexity of the subject and how much they have yet to learn.

Slope of Enlightenment: With continued learning and experience, their confidence gradually increases again. They become more competent and their self-assessment becomes more accurate.

Plateau of Sustainability: Reach a stage where confidence stabilizes as competence grows. Achieving a realistic understanding of knowledge and skills.

Characteristics of a Heart "Alive"

A person with Allah’s معرفة (awareness) and محبة (love), who has توكل (trust) on Him and turns to Him with الإنابة (repentance), is living a blessed life. Such a person would never trade this state for anything. They possess such deep love for Allah that everything other than Allah holds no significance to them. This is the person whose heart is truly "alive".
