The Quantum Century: A 100-Year Journey of Theory and Thought
The Department of Physics, University of the Punjab, Lahore, organized a special event titled “The Quantum Century: A 100-Year Journey of Theory and Thought” to celebrate the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology. The program featured insightful presentations on the historical development and philosophical foundations of quantum mechanics—from the ground-breaking ideas of early 20th century pioneers such as Einstein and Heisenberg to the modern frontiers of research and application. Discussions highlighted a wide spectrum of topics, including the role of quantum theory in driving advanced technologies such as computing, communication, and artificial intelligence, as well as fascinating concepts like quantum teleportation and the transition from classical to quantum systems.
The event was graced by Punjab University Pro-Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Khalid Mahmood, who served as the chief guest. In his address, he reflected on the global significance of the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology and emphasized the vital role of science and technology in empowering the youth of Pakistan.
Renowned physicists contributed as key speakers, including Dr. Farhan Saif from Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad; Dr. Aeysha Khalique from LUMS; and Dr. Bilal Masud, former Director of the Center for High Energy Physics, University of the Punjab. Their talks addressed both the theoretical underpinnings of quantum mechanics and its practical educational dimensions, offering valuable perspectives for students and faculty alike.
The session concluded with remarks by Prof. Dr. Munazza Zulfiqar Ali, Chairperson of the Department of Physics, who commended the efforts of the speakers, students, and faculty members in making the event a resounding success. She also announced plans for a continuing lecture series to further explore the enduring legacy and future promise of quantum science and technology.
