The respiratory system brings oxygen into the body and removes carbon dioxide through organs like the nose, trachea, and lungs, facilitating gas exchange in tiny air sacs (alveoli) where oxygen enters the blood and waste CO2 is exhaled. It involves airways (nose, throat, windpipe, bronchi) to deliver air, lungs (the main site of exchange), and muscles (diaphragm, intercostals) that power breathing. This system is crucial for cellular energy, speech, smell, and maintaining blood pH balance, working closely with the circulatory system to supply oxygen to all tissues.
Key Components & Pathway
Air Intake: Air enters through the nose (warmed, filtered, humidified) or mouth, then travels through the pharynx (throat) and larynx (voice box).
Airway: It passes down the trachea (windpipe), which splits into two bronchi, one for each lung.
Lungs: Inside the lungs, bronchi branch into smaller bronchioles, ending in tiny air sacs called alveoli.
Gas Exchange: In the alveoli, oxygen diffuses into surrounding capillaries (blood vessels) and carbon dioxide moves from the blood into the alveoli to be exhaled.
How Breathing Works (Ventilation)
Inhalation (Breathing In): The diaphragm (a dome-shaped muscle) contracts and moves down, while chest muscles contract, expanding the chest cavity and creating lower pressure to draw air in.
Exhalation (Breathing Out): Muscles relax, the chest cavity shrinks, increasing pressure to push air (and CO2) out.
Other Functions
Speech & Smell: The larynx produces voice, and the system allows for the sense of smell (olfaction).
pH Balance: By controlling CO2 levels, it helps regulate blood acidity (pH).
Support Systems
Circulatory System: Works with the lungs to transport oxygen to tissues and carry carbon dioxide back.
Skeletal System: The ribs protect the delicate lungs and structures.
