Object Oriented Programming using Java 19/08/2021

All BS-CS, BS-SE, BS-IT students learn Object Oriented Programming (OOP) in initial semesters of their degree and forget the core concepts by the time they graduate. On the other side, almost all software development jobs require OOP skill, no matter you work in Angular, Laravel, Django, Spring MVC, Java, C #, Unity, Shopify, Magento, Ruby on Rails, Kotlin or Flutter, etc.

To avoid difficult time in Job interview or during development, visit below link to learn from scratch or revise OOP concepts. Its 100% free, recorded in Urdu by a professional developer and university faculty member.

These days, many competent students prefer doing academic projects in emerging areas/technologies but when they go to job market, face difficulty to source well paying job. Recently one of our student asked:

"Why I can't see any job posting related to Pe*******on testing or IT security. And are internships possible in Security, especially here in lahore."

I want to share my thoughts on this:

If you want to work in Security, Artifical Intelligence, Blockchain, Digital Currencies, Machine Learning and Data Science ... or other modern fields, then go for freelancing or remote job for Europe or America. In local software industry, there are limited opportunities in these areas, not more than 1-2% compared to Web/Mobile apps dev. Because of less number of jobs in these areas, there is more competition, as mostly competent devs want to work in new techs. At least this is what I could figure out from basic search at Rozee.pk ...

Please understand, "wealth is what others need", so if you want to work in local industry, excel in techs they mostly need e.g. Modern Web and Mobile Apps Development technologies as most small scale companies ask for some academic level experience in tech they need. These technologies include: Swift, Kotlin, REACT, Flutter, MERN, MEAN, ASP.NET, ROR, Laravel, Django, Spring/Hibernate, Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento, E-Commerce, Web Services, API/Integration Techs), ERPs or techs bumped-in recently e.g. Cloud Computing/AWS, DevOps, etc. Hope you got my point.

If you think otherwise, please share your thoughts ... so that I could update my understanding.

Lecture 18 - How Domain Name is Resolved into an IP address. DNS 26/03/2021

Web Developers! Do you know what happens when you registers a domain? Where its name is stored? Who maintain and control TLDs e.g. com, .net etc. How your computer find IP address of website hosting server? All this questions are explained in below lecture.
(Recording of my recent lecture of web development course).

Lecture 19 contains live demonstration of concepts explained in Lecture 18 and shows how we do DNS settings of a new domain in DNS server. Lecture 19: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ici9Tgni1fI

A few suggestions for 7th semester CS/SE students who are about to start Final Year Project. I share a general layout, follow your supervisor guidelines for specifics.

1. Spend good time deciding what you should build. People buy/spend to solve their problems not for the love with you or technology. You can sell if you can identify and work on real problems/needs. Discuss with others to get their feedback on your idea. If you can connect with experienced technology and business people, ask them directly what problems you can work on. Make something you can sell (sooner or later). You are going to spend a couple of months in creating, why not create something that others need? If you can't identify a good idea, pick any decent scope project but must do it using a tech-stack of high demand e.g. Flutter, Angular, VUE, React, Shopify, PHP/Laravel, .NET, Python, etc. to at least secure a good job after your graduation.

2. Prepare a proposal in 1-2 weeks listing all stuff that you aim to implement. Clearly divide who would do what. There may be a change later but there must be a tentative plan. During academics, do not divide things horizontally but vertically i.e. each member shall implement complete use cases from backend to frontend. One member doing mobile app and the other web, makes sense but don't go for assigning one the front end, database to another and backend API to 3rd. Our local industry and many freelance projects requires full stack developers.

3. Learn dev technologies in 1.5-2 months of 7th semester start (earlier the better) from YoutTube, Udemy or other sources, if you have not taken related courses in your degree. Once you decided with a tech-stack and started learning it, do not change tech-stack.

(You can learn stuff listed next in this para, along with doing your project dev). Learn git and maintain your code at a git repository e.g. github. Learn the basics of what is good UX/UI, so that when you start coding, you keep an eye on UX too, not just on the features. If you are not a designer, do not feel ashamed of using a quality/premium theme. Focus on your core skill i.e. development. Learn the basics of testing. UX and Testing are the things that most people ignore, its what matters more for users.

4. Start the implementation, make sure you have implemented a decent number of use cases in semester 7, if not all. If you can implement all that would be super awesome. By doing this, you can spend semester 8 in building freelancing profile or to collaborate with your freelance fellows or doing intersnhip. So that before you graduate, you have an experience of pro dev of 6 months at least. Often, after the degree, it becomes difficult to find time for such collaborations/freelancing as often families ask to earn. So better, invest time in such stuff earlier.

Some key insights for software engineers from a talk by Monis Rehman, CEO Rozee.pk

Our problem is not the lack of online jobs portals, you can advertise at Rozee, post at LinkedIn, OLX, Facebook and many other online places. The fundamental problem today is, there is severe shortage of software engineers talent in Pakistan. After COVID, local software services market has grown rapidly because of shortage of resources in developed world and availability of cheaper human resource here. Our software houses got good projects after COVID. Earning from foreign clients, software companies has raised salaries and are giving high increments to engineers. But still the market is facing severe shortage of talent. Employers are really crying for not being able to find quality software engineers. Software Engineers today are requesting jobs websites to put off their profiles as they are busy already. Today they are not finding jobs, but companies are after finding right engineers.

You only need to align your skills with what industry need today. If you have the right skills, if you are expert in something people need, you don't need to find job today, the job market would find you. Here is sever supply and demand problem, here is skills mismatch problem. People dont have skills what software industry need, and this problem is very significant. Its not a technology problem or platform shortage issue, we need to understand this well.
