Strong Letters of Recommendation Can Strengthen Your Application
Planning to apply for a Masterโs or PhD abroad? ๐ฉ๐ช๐บ๐ธ๐ฌ๐ง๐ญ๐บ๐น๐ท๐จ๐ณ๐
Your Letters of Recommendation (LORs) are not simply a formality when they are required. They help universities understand who you are as a student, researcher and future professional.
Hereโs how to approach them:
1๏ธโฃ Choose the right professors
Donโt choose someone simply because they have a big title.
A professor who knows your work well can usually write a much stronger recommendation than someone who barely remembers you.
Look for someone who can speak about your:
โข Research ability
โข Academic performance
โข Critical thinking
โข Work ethic
โข Independence
โข Research potential
2๏ธโฃ Choose people who actually know your work
Strong recommendations often come from professors or supervisors who have worked closely with you through:
โข Thesis or dissertation
โข Research projects
โข Laboratory work
โข Internships
โข Academic or professional projects
Specific examples are much stronger than generic praise.
3๏ธโฃ Build a balanced team
If you need multiple LORs, choose your recommenders strategically.
For example:
๐น Research Supervisor โ Research ability
๐น Course Professor โ Academic performance
๐น Thesis Advisor / Professional Supervisor โ Research potential and independence
4๏ธโฃ Ask early
Professors and supervisors are busy. Ideally, request your LOR several weeks before the deadline so they have enough time to prepare a thoughtful recommendation.
5๏ธโฃ Give your recommender useful information
Share:
๐ CV
๐ SOP / Motivation Letter
๐ Research Proposal, if applicable
๐ University & program details
๐ Application deadlines
๐ Your research interests
๐ A brief summary of your work with them
๐ Relevant achievements
6๏ธโฃ Help them remember your strongest work
If you worked with a professor some time ago, remind them about your contribution.
For example:
โI worked with you on X project, where I was responsible for Y and achieved Z.โ
Specific examples make recommendations more meaningful.
7๏ธโฃ Make your application consistent
Your application should tell one clear academic story:
CV โ Research Experience โ SOP โ LORs
If your SOP explains your research interests, your academic experience and recommendations should support the same direction.
8๏ธโฃ Quality matters more than generic praise
A strong LOR is not simply:
โExcellent student, hardworking and highly motivated.โ
The strongest recommendations often include specific examples showing how you think, solve problems, conduct research, work independently and contribute to a team.
9๏ธโฃ Track your recommendations
If you are applying to multiple universities, keep track of:
University โ Program โ Recommender โ Deadline โ LOR Status
A polite reminder before the deadline is perfectly reasonable.
๐ One Important Point
LOR requirements vary by country, university and program.
Some universities require recommendation letters, some make them optional, and some do not ask for them.
Always check the official admission requirements of the university and program you are applying to.
๐ฏ Remember
Your CV tells the university what you have done.
Your SOP/Motivation Letter explains where you want to go.
Your LOR provides an independent perspective on your academic ability, research potential and readiness for graduate-level study.
Whether you are applying to Germany, the USA, UK, Europe, Tรผrkiye, China, South Korea or other international destinations, prepare your application strategically.
