Duaa is a powerful tool that Allah ﷻ has gifted us.

It’s so beautiful that our Merciful Lord and beloved Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ taught us so many compelling supplications/affirmations for any given time, and when experiencing different emotions.

In Surah Al-Baqarah Ayat 186 Allah ﷻ says “When My servants ask you [O Prophet] about Me: I am truly near. I respond to the one’s prayer when they call upon Me. So let them respond [with obedience] to Me and believe in Me, perhaps they will be guided [to the right way].”

Let’s learn these incredible supplications, and use them to self sooth and get through feeling anxious.

‎للّهُـمَّ إِنِّي أَعْوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الهَـمِّ وَ الْحُـزْنِ
‎ والعًجْـزِ والكَسَلِ والبُخْـلِ والجُـبْنِ
‎ وضَلْـعِ الـدَّيْنِ وغَلَبَـةِ الرِّجال

Allāhumma innī aʿūdhu bika min-l-hammi wa-l-ḥazan, wa aʿūdhu bika min-l-ʿajzi wa-l-kasal, wa aʿūdhu bika min-l-jubni wa-l-bukhl, wa aʿūdhu bika min ghalabati-d-dayni wa qahri-r-rijāl.

O Allah, I seek Your protection from anxiety and grief.
I seek Your protection from inability and laziness.
I seek Your protection from cowardice and miserliness, and I seek Your protection from being overcome by debt and being overpowered by men.

These duaas reminds us that we can get closer to Allah ﷻ through submission to Him and acknowledging that He is in control of all things.

We can consider the concept of countering negative emotions with positive actions. Duaas during times of distress can counteract negative emotions and open up a more objective and reflective attitude.

The consistency of reciting specific duaa can act as a form of mindfulness. And when it becomes automatic during times of distress/anxiety/sadness, it can help to quell harmful emotions.
