Planning a PhD abroad with your family? Germany should be on your 2026/27 shortlist.
Germany combines tuition-free doctoral study, salaried PhD jobs, spouse work rights, child benefits and long-term settlement options.
Why Germany?
• Public-university PhDs are generally tuition-free; students usually pay only a semester contribution.
• Many PhD researchers are hired on TV-L/TVöD employment contracts.
• DFG Research Training Groups often offer 65–100% TV-L E13 positions.
• Salaried researchers normally receive health insurance, pension contributions, paid leave and social-security coverage.
• Major research networks include DFG RTG/IRTG, Max Planck/IMPRS, Helmholtz, Leibniz, Fraunhofer and MSCA Doctoral Networks.
Major funding routes:
• DAAD Doctoral Programmes – around €1,400/month
• DLR-DAAD Doctoral Fellowships – around €1,760/month
• DFG RTG/IRTG funded PhDs
• Max Planck / IMPRS
• Helmholtz doctoral positions
• Leibniz doctoral programmes
• Fraunhofer research positions
• MSCA Doctoral Networks
• Friedrich Ebert Stiftung
• Konrad Adenauer Stiftung
• Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung
• Studienstiftung
• Stiftung der Deutschen Wirtschaft
Family benefits:
• Spouses of qualifying skilled workers/researchers can generally work.
• Children can accompany parents.
• State schools are generally tuition-free.
• Kindergeld 2026: €259/month per eligible child.
• Eligible families may also qualify for Kinderzuschlag up to €297/month per child.
• Parental allowance may range around €300–€1,800/month depending on eligibility.
• In statutory health insurance, eligible spouse/children may sometimes be covered through family insurance without separate premiums.
After PhD:
• Graduates can generally get up to 18 months to find qualified employment.
• Qualifying skilled workers/researchers may obtain PR after about 3 years, subject to residence status, pension contributions, B1 German and other conditions.
• German graduates may qualify for a faster settlement route after 2 years of skilled employment.
• EU Blue Card holders may qualify for settlement after 27 months with A1 German or 21 months with B1.
• Citizenship is generally possible after more than 5 years of lawful residence, subject to requirements.
Important: For family settlement, a salaried PhD contract can be more valuable than a stipend-only scholarship because residence status, pension contributions and social-security rights can differ.
