⚡ The State governments have received the balance of their allocation numbers from the Federal government for their State sponsored visa programs, the most common being the Subclass 190 or the 491. Victoria and New South Wales are moving ahead with their programs with Tasmania to join them shortly. Queensland remains closed at this stage with no advice as to when that situation will change.
⚡ Victoria has announced it will be limiting its nominations in the skilled programs to critical industries and NSW indicating a similar stance. With the timing of the rollout of the vaccination program it is likely this will remain the case until the end of 2021.

⚡ Students who are wanting to extend their stays in Australia are able to access the subclass 408 pandemic visa if they are willing to work in the Agricultural sector. This will give full time work rights for employment in selected industries only, otherwise the visa will not carry work rights generally.
⚡ With the Australian farming community screaming for extra labour this is good option to stay in a safe environment and being paid for the work you do.

⚡ Remember in September 2020 the Department announced changes to the graduate visa program. This was to aid visa holders stranded outside Australia. Students were allowed to receive this visa from outside Australia. They were also granted a concession to apply for this graduate visa within 12 months of completing their course as opposed to the usual six months
⚡ Those in Regional Australia may extend their 485 visa by one or two years, depending on where they attended university. This is on top of the two years currently afforded by the Temporary Graduate Visa.

⚡ Protocols have changed for the online payment of visas. When lodging a payment online with a debit or credit card, the card holder will received a text message requiring them to authorise the payment. Remember to do this so the application does not sit awaiting payment.

⚡ Issue has also arisen with payment by Westpac cards. If paying using a Westpac card this will be blocked by the bank. You will first be required to contact Westpac and have the block removed.

⚡ NSW for example has announced its business visa program will reopen in February 2021 and other States and Territories already have parts of their programs open.

Skilled and business visas will be highly competitive. Have you expressions of interest ready to go.

Remember if the independent skilled program reopens it is ranked and queued by points and date of filing.

Note: If you make a claim for points in your expression of interest be prepared to prove up those claims in the visa application. If you receive an invitation to apply for the visa and you cannot prove all points claimed this will be fatal to the application, no exceptions.

⚡ International Borders

We are constantly asked when the International border will re-open. I think the best answer is we do not know. If however I was to make an educated guess it would be late 2021.

Even though we see vaccines rolling out in certain countries around the globe, it appears to still be unclear whether or not these vaccines inhibit the contagious nature of COVID or merely protect the vaccinated person from the virus. For this reason I do not foresee the government rushing to allow anyone into the country who has a vaccination certificate, at least not without continuing quarantine.

The Australian government has announced its plan to vaccinate the entire Australian population by October 2021. Whilst I applaud the effort, current international experiences may see this as being ambitious.

My guess is the borders will remain close for most of 2021. We sincerely hope we are wrong. However with indicators like QANTAS commencing International travel bookings from June 2021 travel should not be too far away.International Borders - My Two Cents

⚡ Currently all Australian states have now opened their borders to New Zealand travellers, however Western Australia continues to require 14 days quarantine on arrival

⚡ The plan, which could see students land in Melbourne as soon as January, has been put forward by a team of international education and accommodation groups aiming to bring back students without taking hotel quarantine places from returning Australians
