Hadith Hashiya: This blessed Hadith demonstrates the majesty, greatness, and complete sovereignty of Allah, the Lord of Majesty, over the entire universe. When Allah Almighty issues a new command or revelation from above the Throne, the majesty and awe of His Divine Speech causes all the close angels to tremble, and they begin striking their wings in utmost humility and submissiveness. The resonance of this Speech is so powerful and distinct that it is like the thunderous sound produced when a heavy iron chain is dragged across a smooth, shining rock. Due to the fear of Allah, the angels experience a temporary state of awe or near-unconsciousness, and when this awe is removed from their hearts, they confirm with one another what their Lord has commanded. This Hadith establishes that even the mighty and powerful creation of angels is helpless before the majesty of Allah and is completely submissive and obedient to Him.

Hadith Hashiya: This Hadith shows that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) besieged the people of Ta’if, but they could not be conquered due to the strong fortress and the enemy’s fierce resistance. Considering the hardship and losses suffered by the Muslims, the Prophet (PBUH) intended to return, but the Muslims did not wish to leave without achieving victory. Therefore, they fought the following day and suffered many injuries. When the Prophet (PBUH) then announced again that they would return, if Allah wills, the Muslims were pleased, and he smiled at their reaction. This Hadith also highlights the importance of Allah’s will: future plans should be connected to Allah’s will by saying In shaa Allah, because every matter is subject to His will and decree.

Hadith Hashiya: This Hadith indicates that Khayf of Banu Kinanah, meaning the Valley of al-Muhassab, is an important historical site between Makkah and Mina, where Quraysh and Kinanah made a mutual agreement to socially and economically boycott Banu Hashim and Banu al-Muttalib and to hand over the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, to them. Allah Almighty delivered His Messenger from those difficult circumstances, granted the conquest of Makkah, and gave Islam victory. His staying at this place indicates remembering Allah Almighty’s blessing and support and expressing gratitude for them. The Hadith also shows that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, linked his future intention to the will of Allah Almighty, demonstrating that all affairs are subject to His will and decree. His mention of this place during the Conquest of Makkah and the Farewell Pilgrimage also shows the importance of remembering significant historical places and learning lessons from them.

Hadith Footnote: This Hadith teaches that one should not make Allah’s will a condition when supplicating by saying, “O Allah, if You wish, forgive me or have mercy on me.” Rather, one should supplicate with complete sincerity, determination, and certainty, because Allah does whatever He wills and no one can compel Him. Such conditional wording reflects hesitation and a lack of earnestness in asking, whereas a servant should present his needs with full confidence in Allah’s grace and generosity. Allah’s treasures are limitless, and no one can compel or prevent His decision and will. Therefore, it is from the proper etiquette of supplication to ask with certainty, humility, devotion, and firm hope of acceptance.

Hadith Commentary:

The Messenger of Allah PBUH was extremely sincere and compassionate toward his Ummah. At every opportunity, he PBUH cared for their welfare and guided them even regarding matters that people might consider insignificant, so that they could share in the reward. It cannot be imagined that he PBUH would wrong anyone or deprive anyone of their rights. Nevertheless, he encouraged his Companions to intercede so that they could earn a reward through their intercession.

This Hadith clearly demonstrates the Divine Will: when Allah wills, He causes words of granting something to come forth from my tongue. Those who intercede receive a reward, even though their intercession does not affect the Divine Will. Whatever Allah wills comes to pass, and nothing can hinder His Will. All means and causes are subject to His Will. Imam al-Bukhari, may Allah have mercy on him, included this Hadith to establish this very point. And Allah knows best.
