Who discovered the world view long before ?
Ibn al Shatir (14th Century Muslim )
--
Ibn al-Shatir, a 14th century Arab astronomer and , actually developed a heliocentric worldview that existed long before Copernicus' work on heliocentricity. Ibn al-Shatir lived in the Mamluk Empire in what is now Syria and Egypt.
His heliocentric model differed in some aspects from Copernicus' later model, but was still remarkably advanced. In Ibn al-Shatir's model, the Earth was not at the centre of the universe, but was slightly off-centre, moving in an elliptical orbit around the Sun. This model was more precise than the geocentric Ptolemaic system and provided more accurate predictions for the positions of celestial bodies.
It is important to note that the heliocentric worldview was already mentioned in ancient Greek philosophy, notably by Aristarchus of Samos in the 3rd century B.C. and by Herakleides Pontikos in the 4th century B.C. Nevertheless, Ibn al-Shatir is known for his own heliocentric model and his contributions to astronomy and mathematics in the . Copernicus may have known the works of Ibn al-Shatir or other medieval astronomers who developed similar ideas, but the exact source of his inspiration is a matter of debate and investigation.

In 875 CE, at the age of 65, ’Abbās ibn Firnās attempted to fly. Using a hang-glider made of feathers and wood that he built after hours of observing birds in flight, he leapt off the roof of the Rusāfa palace in Cordoba. By all accounts, he flew for several minutes, gliding on the air currents like a raptor!
He is known as “the first man to ever fly”, but in addition to that, he also designed a water clock. He devised means of manufacturing glass, and he developed a chain of rings that could be used to display the motions of the planets and stars. He also developed a process for cutting rock crystal. Thereafter, Spain no longer needed to export quartz to Egypt, but could finish it at home.
‘Abbās Ibn Firnās was an Andalusi polymath, an inventor, astronomer, physician, chemist, engineer, and an Arabic-language poet. You’ve probably heard about the Wright brothers inventing the first motorized flying plane, but the truth is that centuries before them, this Muslim individual invented it.
