Meet Tehreem Mukhtar of the Department of Allied Health Sciences at The Superior University, Lahore, whose research explores a promising new dimension in stroke rehabilitation: the gut–brain connection.

Her research highlights how the trillions of microorganisms in our gut may influence brain health, inflammation, neuroplasticity, and post-stroke recovery.

The study explores how gut microbes can contribute to the production of important neurotransmitters and short-chain fatty acids, while also examining how probiotics, prebiotics, personalized nutrition, and physical therapy could potentially support better rehabilitation outcomes.

The research paper *“A Disaster in the Disaster: A Study on Post-Traumatic Stress Symptoms Among Flood Relief Workers in Pakistan”* has been published in *BMC Psychology*, a Scopus (Q2) indexed journal with an Impact Factor of 4.6.

The study highlights a high burden of post-traumatic stress symptoms among disaster responders, with direct trauma exposure, professional roles, and inadequate protective resources identified as key contributing factors. The findings underscore the importance of integrating responder-focused mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS), adequate safety measures, and structured resilience strategies into Pakistan’s disaster-response systems.
