Things to consider to improve your paragraph writing skills:

1 One paragraph must treat one central idea. If you are asked to write about the advantages of technology, for example, write about the advantages only. Don't include its disadvantages or anything else. If you are asked to talk about the causes of a phenomenon, provide the causes only -- don't include the effects, and vise versa. Respect the task. Otherwise, you will lose yourself a lot of points.

2 Pay attention to your spelling. Five to six spelling mistakes will decrease your score. Thus, you should not write a word if you are not one hundred percent sure of its spelling.

3 Pay close attention to your grammar. Some mistakes cannot be tolerated. One grammatical mistake may destroy a whole sentence, resulting in vagueness and ambiguity in your writing.

4 If you have a good hold on grammar and vocabulary, vary your sentences and structures. Use the passive when needed. Use simple, compound, and complex sentences. Include idioms, but make sure you are using them correctly and make sure that they fit the context. Varying sentence structures shows that you have a good control over the language.

5 Respect the structure of how a paragraph is written.

6 Punctuation is very important. Using a punctuation mark in the wrong place can change the meaning of sentences completely. Keep this in mind while writing.

7 Link your ideas, and never leave any idea unclear. Make sure that your ideas are clear and well-illustrated. Don't just throw in ideas!!!

8 When dealing with an academic piece of writing, state your ideas clearly. Use words and sentences that can express your ideas in the best way possible, in a way that doesn't require the reader to stop and think to understand the ideas you want to convey.
