Surah At-Takasur (Kanzul Iman Translation)
Allah’s Name to commence with, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
The desire to seek more wealth has kept you neglectful.
Until you confronted the graves.
Yes, certainly! You will soon come to know.
Again yes, certainly! You will soon come to know.
Yes, certainly! If you had known with knowledge of certainty, (so you would not have loved wealth).
Indeed, you will definitely see Hell.
Again, you will indeed definitely see it with the sight of certainty.
Then indeed, on that Day, you will definitely be questioned regarding the bounties.
Concise Tafseer (Exegesis & Meaning)
This Surah was revealed in Makkah. Its primary objective is to snap human beings out of the hypnotic trance of materialism and redirect their focus toward the eternal reality of the Hereafter.
1. The Distraction of Materialism (Verses 1 & 2)
The Concept of 'Takasur': Takasur refers to the competitive desire to surpass others in worldly accumulation—whether it is money, property, social status, followers, or family lineage.
The Trap of Negligence: Allah states that this endless rat race has made mankind completely blind and neglectful toward their true purpose: worshipping their Creator and preparing for the afterlife.
"Until you confronted the graves": Man remains trapped in this competitive greed, constantly planning for a long future, until death abruptly arrives and he is placed in the dirt. Historically, it also refers to certain Arab tribes who used to boast about their numbers; when they ran out of living members to count, they would literally go to the graveyards to count the graves of their ancestors to prove their tribe's superiority.
2. The Stages of Harsh Reality (Verses 3 to 7)
The Warning: Allah uses repetitive, emphatic language ("Yes, certainly! You will soon come to know") to create urgency. The illusions of this world will shatter the moment a person takes their last breath.
Knowledge of Certainty (Ilm al-Yaqeen): If human beings truly understood the reality of the Day of Judgment through the light of the Quran and intellect while alive, they would never let the love of wealth compromise their faith.
Sight of Certainty (Ayn al-Yaqeen): On the Day of Resurrection, Hell will be brought forward. Those who ignored the warnings will see it clearly with their own eyes. At that point, belief will be useless, because the time for testing will have passed.
3. The Accountability of Blessings (Verse 8)
The Final Questioning: The Surah concludes with a profound reality check: on the Day of Judgment, every human being will be strictly questioned about the Ni'mah (bounties/blessings) they enjoyed.
What are these Bounties? Scholars of Tafseer note that this does not just mean immense wealth. It includes every single comfort we take for granted: a glass of cool water, a shaded tree, physical health, peace of mind, eyesight, and hearing.
The Core of the Question: The questioning is not to punish, but to audit: "Did you show gratitude (Shukr) to Allah for these free gifts, or did you use them to feed your ego, disobey Him, and forget the poor?"
