Labour Day, also known as International Workers’ Day, is celebrated on May 1 and has its origins in the labor movement of the late 19th century. During this period, workers faced long hours, low wages, and unsafe working conditions, leading to widespread protests and strikes demanding an eight-hour workday. A significant turning point came in 1886 in Chicago, where a peaceful rally in support of striking workers turned violent in what became known as the Haymarket Affair. In 1889, the Second International, an organization of socialist and labor parties, declared May 1 as an international holiday to honor workers and commemorate their struggle. Today, Labour Day symbolizes the ongoing fight for workers’ rights, fair wages, and better working conditions around the world.
