🌟 Spotlight: Haider Ali 🌟
I first met Haider during his med school days at AKU—I (think!) even interviewed him for admission! Fast forward to a mentorship year (my one and only time as a formal mentor!) and countless projects later, Haider has grown into a remarkable force in healthcare innovation.
From Critical Creative Innovative Thinking - CCIT Aga Khan University beachside brainstorming sessions in Karachi 🏖️ to exploring Las Vegas sidelines together at American College of Emergency Physicians - ACEP, Haider has been a constant partner in both work and adventure. Known for his quiet insight and care for his community, he’s someone who thinks deeply, plays hard (whether it’s soccer or video games 🎮), and brings a people-centered approach to every project.
Today, as a Postdoctoral Researcher at UCSF, Haider continues his entrepreneurial journey. His mindset, nurtured here at CCIT, has taken him from our innovation hub to startup life in California, where he’s blending healthcare research with his passion for making a real-world impact. And let’s not forget his contributions to and other CCIT-based papers 📚—he’s unstoppable!
We're so proud of Haider's journey, and have no doubt he’ll keep pushing boundaries and lifting others along the way.
If you’re curious, don’t hesitate to reach out (we're lending him out for free)—he’s always happy to connect, even if he’s just taking a quick break from the innovation lab or the soccer field! ⚽💼

🌟 Celebrating Our Former Team Members 🌟
Over the years, I’ve had the pleasure of working with some truly remarkable individuals at Critical Creative Innovative Thinking - CCIT the 1st and (to date) only healthcare centric co-innovation and incubation hub at the Aga Khan University.
As a small way to appreciate their journeys, I’m sharing a series of posts highlighting their diverse talents, contributions, and passions that continue to make an impact.
Today, I’m spotlighting Mohsin Memon – a true multi-talented force! Part Biomedical Engineer, part Computational Sciences expert, and part Digital Health enthusiast. And yes, he has the degrees to back up each of these roles!
Mohsin has been volunteering with Climate Action Pakistan (CAP) , an organization dedicated to promoting climate literacy and empowering local communities. He does this purely out of passion and commitment – no paycheck involved. 😊
In his professional life, he’s making waves at University Hospital Galway , where he contributes to the digital transformation of healthcare services. Mohsin’s role centers on advocating for patient rights and ensuring that healthcare priorities align with real-world needs.
Additionally, he works with the University of Galway IT and Information Services team, helping both staff and students get comfortable with the digital tools provided by the university.
And as if that wasn’t enough, Mohsin’s got a creative side too – he’s an aspiring photographer 📸, though he’ll be the first to tell you his Instagram following is still a work in progress! 😅 [ ]
Let’s show some love and appreciation for Mohsin and his incredible journey! 🌍❤️

🌟 Innovation Journeys: From CCIT to Impact 🌟
Every innovator has a story, and today, I want to start sharing from the brilliant minds who were once part of our Critical Creative Innovative Thinking - CCIT innovation and incubation hub at the Aga Khan University.
These stories were gathered through recent updates shared by our Community of Innovation on WhatsApp, where we asked everyone to reflect on their journey since CCIT. What came through were not just status updates, but deep reflections on growth, passion, and the relentless pursuit of better solutions.
🚀 Dr. Arfa Masihuddin, a doctor turned health policy expert, now leads two startups—Walking Thoughts & Rufayda—both aiming to revolutionize healthcare and education through innovation. From ERAS application consultancy to mental health counseling for healthcare providers, Arfa's journey showcases the fusion of personal passion with impactful change.
Arfa's story and the rest represent what innovation is all about: taking your vision, turning it into reality, and creating lasting impact. They highlight that innovation doesn’t end at CCIT—it evolves, grows, and continues to shape industries and communities.
🔍 Why this matters: We’re building a collective story—a tapestry of innovation that spans beyond the walls of any one hub. These updates, initially shared on WhatsApp, reveal a richness in personal stories that we can now weave together to inspire others and amplify the work we’re all doing.
💡 Your ideas matter! If you have suggestions on how we can best turn these personal stories into something that drives innovation awareness and sparks collaboration, drop a comment or DM us!
Let’s spark change together. 🔥

part V: Returning to Texas Children's Hospital, after more than a decade, stirred memories and inspiration. The incredible administrative staff played a pivotal role in supporting me during my time here, and it was heartening to reconnect with them. Their quiet dedication often goes unnoticed but remains the backbone of so much that we accomplish.
I also took a moment to reflect at the memorial of Dr. Ralph Feigin, a giant in pediatric medicine. His legacy still resonates within these walls, a reminder of the lives touched and the profound impact of compassionate leadership.
In revisiting, I felt a renewed sense of purpose and appreciation for those who’ve helped shape our paths—past and present.
Gratitude is an understatement.

Stepping back into Dr. Brendan Lee’s lab at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, nestled within the Texas Medical Center—the world's largest medical hub—felt like rewinding time.
Years ago, these faces were more than just colleagues; they were the ones you shared countless late nights, breakthroughs, and setbacks with. Together, we pieced together discoveries, learning from each other along the way.
Looking at this place now, I can’t help but feel a rush of nostalgia. It wasn’t just about the science—it was about the friendships, the lessons, and the growth that shaped who we are today.

Healthcare & Innovation Texas Medical Center post #3: Reconnecting at Texas Children's Hospital!
Last week, I had the privilege of meeting up with Michael Pickett, a brilliant nurse innovator and fellow Emergency Department colleague from my time at Texas Children's Hospital.
It was incredible to see how his innovative work with simulators is advancing vascular access techniques, empowering nurses worldwide. As someone who’s spent years in the ED trenches, I know firsthand the importance of practical, hands-on training like this.
Michael’s passion for improving patient care through cutting-edge solutions is contagious. It was a blast catching up, reminiscing about our days in the ED, and hearing about his incredible journey. The world of healthcare is better with people like Michael pushing the boundaries of what's possible.
Here’s to continued collaboration and innovation!

Part II of my Texas Medical Center reflections on Mentorship and Innovation.
I had the great honor of reconnecting with Dr. Joan Shook, a leader and mentor who has profoundly influenced my journey in emergency medicine and beyond. As my second boss, Dr. Shook not only demonstrated exceptional leadership at Texas Children's Hospital & Baylor College of Medicine, but she also exemplified the importance of quality, safety, and innovation in healthcare.
Our recent discussion sparked new ideas around healthcare innovation, particularly in the realms of pediatric safety, quality, and storytelling for children’s health literacy (that merges with ). It’s inspiring to revisit these conversations with someone who has continually pushed the boundaries of what’s possible in our field.
Grateful for the guidance and the vision, which continue to shape my work today!

Grateful to reconnect with Dr. Brendan Lee, my PhD mentor and first boss at Baylor College of Medicine, as I mark the 13th year since leaving Houston. It was under his guidance that I first began my journey in genetics, completing my PhD and medical genetics residency. Though my path led me to Emergency Medicine and leadership at Aga Khan University in Pakistan, the foundation Dr. Lee provided has always fueled my passion for innovation in healthcare.
Now, as I explore new horizons back in the US, particularly in the world of innovation, I'm reminded how invaluable mentors like Dr. Lee are in shaping our futures and opening doors, even years down the road. Here’s to the next chapter!

Congratulations to my friend and colleague, Mr. Irfan Khan, CEO of Evercare Group, on being named one of the 200 Inspirational Leaders of 2024!
I have known Irfan for a long time—since the time I moved back to Pakistan, and he started working at Aga Khan University. Afterwards, my team and I collaborated on projects in and while he was at Mukhtar A. Sheikh Hospital.
Irfan's emphasis on leadership extends beyond the boardroom—rooted in mentorship, humility, and the well-being of people and their families. This underscores a valuable perspective.
His approach serves as a reminder of the evolving role leaders play in shaping not just organizations, but lives.
