The Center for Design Innovation shared the tape of a rare speech, it was a fascinating snapshot of the transitional period from mainframe to personal computing. Steve Jobs is typically charismatic in the speech, begging the attending designers to help Apple make computers that actually look good. The speech was given in front of a relatively small audience at a somewhat obscure event called the International Design Conference in Aspen (IDCA). The theme of that year’s conference was “The Future Isn’t What It Used To Be”, which looking back seems all too fitting. The ideas discussed and the predictions were quite phenomenal considering the general views of people at the time, some the main ideas & predictions unfolded to reality, also one of the reasons why this speech is so awesome is that it inspires designers and entrepreneurs to think big and have a deeper foresight in to the future of tech that impact it might have in our overall lives. The ubiquitous nature of computing today serves as an essence to what the future might hold for us, where designers and engineers think inventively to create the most ergonomic tech in order to create better lives for all of us.
'Project 83' is an initiative inspired by this 1983 speech. We believe it is of an extreme importance that everyone be aware of technology and applications on a deeper level and not leave it just for the "professionals" out there. At 'Project 83' we discuss, develop and debate workflows and ideas related to design + technology, so that we can contemplate and understand creative ways of solving problems and spreading a sound awareness of how the wired world around us actually ticks. We will be conducting our sessions in Universities and other relevant institutions to spread ideas, to educate and discuss about technology and the processes that drive it. A ‘Project 83’ session one or more speakers that belong to different disciplines of technology. The first part this session is a speech combined with some visuals to be presented on a projector, the speech would be focused on a single topic aimed to conclude towards some solution and to create an understanding of the related material(speech). Second part would be an interactive session which would further stimulate the audience and create a collaborative environment which may eventually serve as a catalyst to initiate thought provoking questions and ideas. This part can consists of an interactive activity(like in a workshop) or a simple exercise that is relevant and fruitful, imparting a deeper understanding of the topic at hand. Third and the final part of the session will be Q&A where students/participants will indulge in to some tough questions with the speakers about the topic discussed an exercised earlier. The aim of these sessions are the same as the aim of this entity, that is to educate, collaborate and share ideas about technology.
