JSMU Diagnostic Laboratory and Blood Bank Conducts Training Session on Blood Culture Sample Collection at SESSI Hospital Landhi

With the approval and vision of the Honorable Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Amjad Siraj Memon, the JSMU Diagnostic Laboratory and Blood Bank conducted an informative training session on “Blood Culture Sample Collection Techniques” at SESSI Hospital Landhi on 24th September, 2026.

The session was conducted under the supervision of Dr. Binish Arif, Consultant, Microbiology Department. The JSMU team comprised Mr. Shafait Ali Bugti, Additional Director, Diagnostic Laboratory and Blood Bank; Ms. Irum, Manager and Microbiologist; Mr. Owais Khan, Administration; and Ms. Kehkshan, Phlebotomist. The session was also supported by Prof. Dr. Muhammad Israr Nasir, In-charge, JSMU Laboratory.

Ms. Irum, Medical Technologist, Microbiology Department, JSMU, delivered a comprehensive presentation highlighting appropriate techniques, precautions, and best practices for blood culture sample collection. A practical demonstration was subsequently conducted by Ms. Kehkshan, Phlebotomist, providing hands-on guidance on the proper collection and handling of blood culture samples.

The session also covered recommended blood volumes for culture, including approximately 5–8 mL for adult patients and 3–5 mL for pediatric patients, along with appropriate sample handling and mixing procedures to support reliable microbiological testing.

The training was organized in collaboration with SESSI Hospital Landhi, with participation from Dr. Zulfiqar, DMS; Dr. Humaira, Pathologist, SESSI Hospital Landhi Laboratory; and other members of the hospital team. M.S. of SESSI Hospital Landhi, Dr. Jagmal, was also present and appreciated the JSMU team’s efforts in providing technical training and promoting quality practices in diagnostic laboratory services.

The initiative aimed to strengthen technical skills, improve blood culture sample collection practices, and contribute to enhanced quality of diagnostic services and patient care.

SESSI Hospital Landhi is also on the panel of the JSMU Diagnostic Laboratory and Blood Bank through the efforts of the Registrar, Dr. Azam Khan, further strengthening institutional collaboration between the two organizations.

Academic Council Approves Key Academic and Programme Reforms

Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU) has approved the initiation of MD programmes in Medicine and Allied and Surgery and Allied, marking a significant expansion of its postgraduate medical education portfolio. The decision was taken at the 41st meeting of the JSMU Academic Council, chaired by Vice Chancellor Professor Amjad Siraj Memon. The programmes will be initiated subject to revision by the Quality Enhancement Cell (QEC-JSMU).

The Academic Council also considered and approved a range of other academic and administrative matters, including key reforms aimed at strengthening academic programmes and institutional processes.

The Council approved the extension of the duration for completion of the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree. It also approved the award of exit qualifications—transcripts for PhD candidates and certificates for MPhil candidates who fulfil the requirements of their registered degree programmes.

The Council approved the JSMU Supervisor Policy, revised MHPE Curriculum Document, Terms of Reference for the IME Curriculum, and the Postgraduate Clinical Programme Template. Permission was also granted to rationalize teaching weeks in alignment with JSMU’s uniform academic structure.

The reconstitution of the Boards of Studies (BoS) for the Departments of Dermatology and Pathology was approved. Post-facto approval was also granted for the Boards of Studies of the Departments of Urology and Anaesthesiology subject to the amendments suggested by the house. The minutes of the Boards of Faculty meetings for Surgical and Allied and Medicine and Allied disciplines, as well as the minutes of the 40th Academic Council meeting, were also approved.

The Nutrition Curriculum for undergraduate MBBS students was approved.

The Academic Council reaffirmed JSMU’s commitment to continuous academic improvement, quality assurance, and the promotion of innovative and ethically grounded education.

Garden Retreat 3.0 – Celebrating Student Innovation and Achievement

The Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (IPS), Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU), organized Garden Retreat 3.0 on 17 September 2026. Organized by the Department of Pharmacognosy under the leadership of Dr. Shehla Imam, with the support of Dr. Bushra Hina, Dr. Sumaira Ishaque, Dr. Kaneez Fatima and Mr. Ahmed, the event provided 2nd- and 3rd-year Pharm-D students with a platform to transform their academic learning into creative ideas, innovative projects, and practical pharmaceutical products.

The event featured herbal formulations and Poster Competitions, showcasing students’ creativity, scientific thinking, teamwork, and innovative approaches to herbs, medicinal plants, pharmaceutical formulations, and healthcare solutions.

Visit to JSMU Diagnostic Laboratory and Blood Bank

A delegation led by Prof. Dr. Saeed Khan, Director, Provincial Public Health Reference Laboratory, Sindh, Dow University of Health Sciences, visited the JSMU Diagnostic Laboratory & Blood Bank Facility, located opposite the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD), Karachi.

Prof. Dr. Muhammad Israr Nasir, In-charge, Diagnostic Laboratory, JSMU, along with Mr. Shafait Ali Bugti, Additional Director, Diagnostic Laboratory and Blood Bank, and Ms. Irum, Manager, received the delegation and briefed them about the facility.

The delegation visited various sections, including the Blood Bank, Biochemistry, Histopathology, Microbiology, Hematology, Molecular Diagnostics, and Genomics laboratories. The team also reviewed ongoing and upcoming diagnostic, molecular, and genomic services, including the planned Genomics and Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT) facility and expansion of diagnostic collection services.

The visit provided an opportunity to discuss future collaboration and knowledge-sharing in laboratory diagnostics, molecular pathology, and genomics. Prof. Dr. Saeed Khan appreciated the vision of the Honourable Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Amjad Siraj Memon, in developing modern diagnostic and healthcare facilities at JSMU.

The delegation also participated in INSPIRE 2026 – National Medical Research Symposium at JSMU, contributing to the panel discussion, “Experimental & Lab-Based Research — Is It Possible for Students?”

CME Session on “HIV Diagnosis and Its Implications” Held at JSMU

A Continuing Medical Education (CME) session titled “HIV Diagnosis and Its Implications” was organized by the Department of Pathology, Sindh Medical College, Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU), on 22 September 2026 for final-year MBBS students. The session focused on the importance of safe injection practices, timely detection, appropriate reporting, and prevention of blood-borne viral infections, including HIV, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C.

The session highlighted the growing public health importance of HIV in Pakistan. According to WHO, Pakistan accounted for approximately 55% of people living with HIV in the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region in 2023. More recent WHO data indicate that an estimated 350,000 people were living with HIV in Pakistan in 2024, while new HIV infections had increased substantially over the previous 15 years.

Dr. Farheen delivered a session emphasizing the importance of curbing the HIV epidemic, early diagnosis, and timely initiation of antiretroviral therapy (ART), which can enable people living with HIV to lead long and healthy lives.

Dr. Joveria Farooqi, renowned medical microbiologist from Aga Khan University, discussed the importance of HIV screening and the diagnostic challenges associated with suspected cases. She also explained approaches to screening and confirmation of HIV infection, highlighting the role of accurate and timely diagnosis in patient management.

Faculty members from JPMC and SIOHS also participated in the session and emphasized the importance of extending awareness and educational initiatives to dental hospitals, JPMC, and healthcare professionals and staff involved in patient care.

The session concluded with remarks by Prof. Mehmood Hasan, Chairperson, Department of Pathology. Certificates were distributed among the speakers and the organizer, Dr. Binish Arif Sultan, in recognition of their contribution to the successful conduct of the CME session.

The session reflects JSMU’s commitment to strengthening medical education, promoting infection prevention and safe healthcare practices, and equipping future healthcare professionals with knowledge essential for early detection, appropriate management, and prevention of blood-borne infections.

JSMU Anatomy Department Holds Training for DPT Faculty on SECTRA Table

The Department of Anatomy, Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU), organized a faculty development program titled “Training the Trainers for DPT Faculty Members” at the Bone Bank, Department of Anatomy, JSMU, under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Sadaf Hamid, Chairperson, Department of Anatomy.

The program focused on the use of the SECTRA Table in anatomy teaching, with sessions on an overview of the technology, Upper Limb Anatomy, Lower Limb Anatomy, and Relevant Clinical Anatomy. The sessions were conducted by Dr. Anam Pario, Dr. Owais Sarwar, Dr. Sara Zahid, and Dr. Ubaid Khanzada, respectively.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Dr. Ambreen Usmani, Principal SMC, JSMU, said that digital tools can support the understanding of anatomical structures and their clinical relevance. She emphasized the importance of faculty training in adopting technology-based teaching methods.

The training provided DPT faculty members with practical exposure to the SECTRA Table and its application in teaching upper and lower limb anatomy. It also highlighted the integration of clinical anatomy and digital visualization into classroom and practical teaching.

Simulation-Driven Pharmacy Practice Skills: Clinical Readiness Session on IV/IM Injection Techniques and CPR Held at JSMU

The Department of Pharmacy Practice, Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (IPS), Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU), organized a simulation-driven clinical skills session focused on IV/IM injection techniques and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), providing students with hands-on learning opportunities to strengthen their clinical readiness and practical competencies.

The session was organized under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Huma Ali, Principal IPS, Ms. Sadaf Naeem, Head of the Department of Pharmacy Practice, and Dr. Saba Zubair, Lecturer, whose dedicated efforts contributed to the successful organization of the activity.

The workshop featured valuable training sessions by Ms. Shabana Nazir, Principal, College of Nursing, NICH; Mr. Farooq Saeed, Coordinator, College of Nursing, NICH; Mr. Saad Mehmood; and Ms. Yusra, College of Nursing, NICH.

The hands-on sessions covered CPR, First Aid and Choking Management, AED Simulation, and IV/IM Drug Preparation and Practice, enabling students to develop practical skills relevant to emergency response, medication preparation, and safe administration.

The activity also highlighted the collaborative efforts of the College of Nursing, NICH, and the Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, JSMU. The interprofessional learning initiative brought together expertise from nursing and pharmacy to promote clinical competency, effective communication, teamwork, and a shared commitment to patient safety and quality care.

Special appreciation was extended to the student volunteers, Muhammad Hamza Ahmer, Saadullah, Shizza Azam, Laiba Marium, and Bushra Abid, for their active participation and support in making the session successful.

The Student Research Forum (SRF), Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU), successfully organized the 1st INSPIRE Symposium 2026, featuring Oral and Poster Research Presentation Competitions that provided students with an engaging platform to present their research, exchange ideas and receive expert evaluation.
