The Madina Umbrellas (officially known as the Medina Haram Piazza Shading Umbrellas) are a massive system of 250 convertible automated umbrellas erected in the courtyard of Al-Masjid an-Nabawi (The Prophet's Mosque) in Medina, Saudi Arabia. Designed by German architect Mahmoud Bodo Rasch and his firm SL Rasch, these iconic architectural masterpieces shade over 143,000 square meters. They protect millions of pilgrims from extreme desert temperatures exceeding 48°C (118°F) and shelter them from rain.

🛠️ Key Specifications & Design

Unmatched Scale: Each umbrella stands approximately 20 meters tall and covers an area of 6,700 square feet.

Capacity: A single umbrella structure successfully shades about 800 worshippers.

High-Tech Fabric: Built using specialized sand-colored PTFE fabric. The material provides high UV protection, fire resistance, and wind durability, while avoiding a blinding glare.

Integrated Cooling: Every column features built-in mist-spraying fans with 16 water apertures. These help reduce the local ambient courtyard temperature by at least 8°C.

Aesthetic Integration: When folded, the columns seamlessly mimic the design of traditional slender minarets, preserving the sacred architecture. The fabric is detailed with decorative light-blue ribbons.

🕒 Daily Schedule & Operation

The automated opening and closing cycles are software-controlled. They are strategically timed around daily prayers to match sun positioning:

Morning Opening: The umbrellas fully unfold in a delayed, fluid sequence resembling blooming flowers shortly after Fajr prayer at sunrise.

Evening Closing: They gradually fold back down around Asr or before Maghrib prayer to protect the membrane fabric from nighttime moisture accumulate
Wind Safety: For safety, an onboard anemometer automatically halts any opening or closing if wind speeds exceed 50 km/h.

Are you planning a trip to visit the Prophet's Mosque, looking for architectural details, or interested in commercial replicas for public spaces?
