FYP Spotlight | EchoWalk – Smart Mobility for the Visually Impaired
The Department of Biomedical Engineering & Allied Health Sciences (BMEAHS), Sir Syed University of Engineering & Technology (SSUET) proudly presents the remarkable Final Year Project “EchoWalk – Smart Mobility for the Visually Impaired”, developed by our talented students Nazia Fida, Maryam Musa, Mehak Hashmi, and Almeera Naeem.
Supervised by: Engr. Nageen Shahid
Co-Supervised by: Prof. Dr. Sidra Abid
EchoWalk represents an innovative integration of engineering design, intelligent navigation, GPS-based technology, 3D-printed prototyping, and user-centered design to develop a practical mobility solution aimed at supporting visually impaired individuals.
The project focuses on transforming an initial concept into a functional mobility prototype while carefully considering usability, stability, practicality, physical design, and real-world user requirements. Through the integration of GPS-based navigation and iterative prototype development, the students worked toward creating a more accessible and practical mobility solution.
A significant part of the project involved the design, 3D printing, testing, and refinement of the physical prototype. Multiple components and design iterations were explored, allowing the students to experience firsthand the importance of testing, modification, and continuous improvement in engineering development.
Through EchoWalk, the students strengthened their understanding of system integration, GPS technology, prototype development, 3D printing, user-focused engineering design, testing, and iterative improvement. Beyond technical knowledge, the project also developed their skills in teamwork, creativity, problem-solving, adaptability, patience, and persistence.
More than simply completing a Final Year Project, EchoWalk demonstrates how Biomedical Engineering can combine technology, innovation, and human-centered design to address everyday challenges and promote greater independence and accessibility for people with visual impairments.
The department and Chairperson proudly appreciate Nazia, Maryam, Mehak, and Almeera for their dedication, teamwork, perseverance, and commitment to transforming an idea into a meaningful real-world solution.
Their project highlights the role of Biomedical Engineering in developing inclusive technologies that place human needs at the center of engineering innovation.
👏 Congratulations to the entire team on successfully completing their Final Year Project! We wish them continued success in their professional journey and look forward to seeing them contribute to the future of accessible and assistive healthcare technologies.
