Over the past 3 months, The School of Writing successfully carried out a training program on Participatory Visual Research across five districts in Sindh.

125 incredible women who serve as Climate Champions in Sanghar, Thatta, Badin, Umerkot and Kambar Shahdadkot engaged in storytelling, photography, and participatory research to advocate for climate resilience, gender empowerment, and economic stability.

Funded by Pathfinder International and supported by local partners, this initiative empowered women to share real stories from their communities.

About Beena Sarwar:
Beena Sarwar, a Pakistani multimedia journalist, editor, and documentary filmmaker, focuses on human rights, gender, media, peace, extremism, violence, and South Asia. A Nieman Fellow at Harvard University in 2006 and a Fellow at the Carr Center for Human Rights Policy at the Harvard Kennedy School in 2007, she has taught journalism at Princeton University, Brown University, and Harvard Summer School. She has contributed to global media outlets such as New York Times, Guardian, Al Jazeera, and CNN. Editor of Aman ki Asha, and founder member of the Pakistan-India People’s Action for Peace and Democracy, she is also a co-founder of the South Asia Peace Action Network, with three decades of fostering peace and dialogue in the region. She is also founder and Editor-in-chief of Sapan News Network, a syndicated news and features service launched in August 2022.

The Rising Loaves summer writing leaders spent time planning this afternoon with program co-director Mary Guerrero!

2024 marks the 10th summer for our middle school program, The Rising Loaves: Andover Bread Loaf at Lawrence History Center.

The theme this summer is: "We Are Story Weavers"

The program will run from July 8 - July 26, 2024. More information may be found at https://lawrencehistory.org/education/summer

The program is made possible through funding from the Stearns and Russell Trusts, Andover Bread Loaf, the Essex County Community Foundation Greater Lawrence Summer Fund, and the Rogers Family Foundation. Lunch will be provided through a partnership with the Lawrence Public Schools Summer Meals program.

The 'Final Reading & Community Open House' will be held on Friday, July 26, 2024, Noon - 2:00 pm and is made possible, in part, by a storytelling grant awarded by Mass Humanities. Event details to come!
