"Creative Schools: The Grassroots Revolution That's Transforming Education"
by Sir Ken Robinson, PhD,
The author emphasizes the need for a radical rethinking of the current education system. Robinson argues for a shift away from the industrial, standardized model of education toward a more personalized, creative approach that nurtures individual talents and fosters a love for learning.
Here are 10 key lessons from the book:
1. Education Should be Personalized
Every child has unique talents, interests, and learning styles. Schools should create personalized learning environments that cater to these differences, helping students reach their full potential.
2. Creativity is as Important as Literacy
Creativity should be at the heart of education. Robinson argues that fostering creativity is essential for students to adapt to an ever-changing world, yet traditional schools often suppress it in favor of rigid curricula.
3. Standardized Testing is Not the Solution
Overemphasis on standardized testing stifles creativity and limits real learning. Education should focus on cultivating critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity rather than teaching to the test.
4. Teachers are the Key to Educational Transformation
Teachers play a pivotal role in shaping the learning experience. Robinson stresses the importance of empowering teachers to innovate in the classroom, allowing them the freedom to design engaging and meaningful learning experiences.
5. Learning Should be Engaging and Relevant
Education should be connected to the real world and engage students' natural curiosity. When learning is relevant to students' lives, they are more likely to be motivated and passionate about what they study.
6. Schools Should Focus on the Whole Child
A well-rounded education nurtures intellectual, social, emotional, and physical development. Schools should focus not just on academic achievement but also on helping students become well-rounded individuals.
7. Collaboration is More Important than Competition
In an interconnected world, collaboration is key to success. Robinson advocates for a shift away from competitive, test-driven systems toward collaborative learning environments where students work together to solve problems.
8. Diversity of Intelligence Should be Celebrated
People learn in different ways, and there are multiple types of intelligence (linguistic, mathematical, musical, interpersonal, etc.). Schools should recognize and celebrate this diversity, offering a variety of ways for students to succeed.
9. Education Should Prepare Students for Life, Not Just Work
Schools often focus too much on preparing students for specific careers rather than teaching them how to live fulfilling lives. Education should equip students with the skills and mindset to thrive in a rapidly changing world.
10. A Grassroots Revolution is Needed
True educational reform will not come from the top down but from grassroots efforts. Parents, teachers, and communities must work together to create schools that are responsive to the needs of their students and that foster creativity, curiosity, and lifelong learning.
Sir Ken Robinson’s "Creative Schools" advocates for a new vision of education that celebrates creativity, nurtures individuality, and prepares students for the complex challenges of the future. It calls for a shift away from the one-size-fits-all model and towards a system that values personalized learning and the holistic development of each student.

Understanding Lunar Phases During Ramadan
Ramadan offers a unique opportunity to observe the fascinating changes in the moon's appearance, known as lunar phases. Make it a daily practice to look at the moon each evening after Iftar. To help you understand better, please focus your observations on specific dates: the 1st, 7th, 14th, and 21st nights of Ramadan.
Waxing Phase (1st to 14th):
From the start of Ramadan, the moon enters its waxing phase, gradually increasing in illuminated areas.
By the 7th night, you'll see a half-moon, indicating the first quarter phase.
On the 14th night, the moon reaches its full phase, appearing as a complete circle, sometimes described as a "lotus shape."
Waning Phase (15th to 29/30th):
After the full moon, the waning phase begins, with the illuminated area decreasing.
During this period, extend your observation time from after Isha prayer until Suhoor.
On the 21st, observe the moon during the Suhoor time, and you will notice that the moon has waned to a half-moon again, indicating the third quarter phase.
During your observations, take time to reflect on the natural world. Remember that the moon, the sun, Earth, and the entire cosmos are a creation of Allah. This intricate system is designed to serve us, providing us with a visible calendar and a reminder of the vastness of His creation. Observing these changes can enhance our appreciation for the natural world and our connection to our faith.

The Importance of Circle Time in Preschool
Circle Time is a cornerstone of preschool education, creating a vibrant space for learning, connection, and growth. It’s not just about sitting in a circle; it’s a dynamic time when young children come together to develop essential social, emotional, and academic skills.
Building Community and Connection
Circle Time fosters a sense of belonging among children. As they sit together, share their thoughts, and participate in group activities, they learn to value each other’s perspectives. This helps build a nurturing classroom community where children feel safe, heard, and respected.
Enhancing Communication Skills
Through songs, stories, and discussions, Circle Time provides countless opportunities for children to practice speaking and listening. Whether sharing a personal experience or responding to a teacher’s question, children build confidence in expressing themselves and develop vital language skills.
Developing Routine and Structure
Preschoolers thrive on consistency. Circle Time establishes a predictable routine, signaling the start or end of the day. This structure helps children understand expectations, fostering a sense of security and discipline.
Encouraging Emotional Expression
Circle Time often includes moments for children to talk about their feelings or celebrate small achievements. This practice helps them identify and articulate emotions, building emotional intelligence and resilience.
Learning Through Play
Activities during Circle Time, such as singing, clapping games, or storytelling, engage children in fun, interactive learning. These activities are designed to develop motor skills, memory, and creativity, all while reinforcing academic concepts like numbers, letters, and shapes.
Promoting Cooperation and Teamwork
Group activities teach children to take turns, share, and cooperate with their peers. These foundational social skills are crucial for success in school and beyond.
In conclusion, Circle Time is much more than a daily ritual. It’s a powerful tool that nurtures holistic development, preparing preschoolers for the next stages of their educational journey. By investing in meaningful Circle Time, teachers lay the groundwork for lifelong learning and relationships.
