Math Mania
A place where people who love math challenges gather together and flex their math muscles!
08/05/2018
Children love the wonder of the unknown! This interest can be channeled towards a fun math activity over the summer. Suggest a location to your child and ask them to plan a vacation to that spot in a certain budget. Ask them to factor in transportation cost, food, shopping, accommodations, sight seeing, etc. This activity will allow them to brush up on their math skills as well as geography skills. Learning in disguise is the best kind of learning! :))
Interesting question:
Ginger is 10 years old. She asks her teacher about her age. "I will be 58 years old by the time you reach my age," replies her teacher. How old is her teacher?
Tip 2:
Real learning happens after failure! Embrace the word!🙂
After a topic has been introduced, give your child a question to attempt and allow him or her time to analyze and come up with an answer. Appreciate all answers and ask for the reasoning behind it. If the logic is faulty probe into it until they realize the mistake, without spelling out the mistake itself.
I know it can be frustrating but let them try multiple methods to solve the question. It will lead to a deeper learning experience and greater retention compared to being told the correct answer!
Who hates the long drawn out "ugh" they hear from their children whenever the word math is mentioned? Why is it that our children are unable to see math as a riddle that works out the brain but rather an incomprehensible task that has to be completed and then forgotten. For all parents out there who are struggling with their kids understanding math concepts, we shall suggest a tip:
1. Identify the concept that your child is struggling with the most and for five days a week give them two problem sums related to that topic!
Why problem sums? It is an automatic application of math to the real world and allows children to identify the math concepts that would be applicable. Problem sums can be engaging in story format and allow for a deeper learning experience.
