A small decision can leave a lasting impact.
Recently, I came across a situation where a group of students who once contributed to organizing a farewell for their seniors are now choosing not to attend their own farewell, due to difficult social and emotional experiences during their school years. As a result, they are also being excluded from receiving souvenirs because they are not contributing financially.
While this may seem like a simple matter of fairness on the surface, it raises deeper concerns.
When participation and recognition are tied strictly to payment, we risk overlooking the emotional realities students go through. For some, opting out is not about unwillingnessโbut about unresolved hurt, exclusion, or discomfort. Denying them a token of closure may reinforce feelings of isolation rather than healing them.
At an individual level, such practices can deepen emotional wounds, reduce a sense of belonging, and leave lasting negative memories associated with what should have been a meaningful milestone.
At a collective level, it shapes a culture where empathy takes a backseat to transactions. Schools are not just institutions for academic growthโthey are spaces where values like inclusion, understanding, and compassion should be nurtured.
Farewells are meant to mark endings with dignity and unity. Perhaps itโs worth asking: should moments of closure be conditional, or should they be opportunities to uplift every student, regardless of their circumstances?

Attending โThe State of History and Historiographyโ conference was both inspiring and, at times, disheartening. I deeply appreciated the chance to reconnect with my teachers and friends, yet the discussions revealed some troubling realities about the discipline today.
At Karachi, Pakistan, only a handful of colleges โ around four โ currently offer General History, largely because itโs perceived as a โnon-career-orientedโ subject. As a result, the number of History students continues to decline, and genuine interest in the field is fading further. Even more concerning is the limited access to primary historical sources, which severely restricts meaningful research.
Looking at the current scenario, it seems Pakistan has yet to learn from its own history โ whether itโs the neglected heritage of the Indus Valley Civilisation, the forgotten ideals of our founding leaders, or the persistent inequalities among provinces. If we continue to overlook the importance of History, where will we stand in the near future?
Itโs time to rekindle a sense of value and urgency around History โ not merely as an academic subject, but as a mirror of our society and a guide for our collective future.
I am grateful to the Pakistan Historical Society, Hamdard Foundation Pakistan, and the General History Department at the University of Karachi for organising such a thought-provoking event.
