English shouldn’t be a criterion for eligibility for corporate jobs or other high-end jobs and interviews etc but it is. It’s a lovely language which like any other language comes with exposure and utility.
You’ve to be exposed to it and utilize it to express yourself. Over the years I’ve seen how people haven’t been fortunate enough to go to fancy English medium schools or international schools and how those people were at a disadvantage because of it and that struggle with the language absolutely does reflect in all areas of their life. That has always made me sad.
Because English isn’t the only medium in which you can express yourself, it’s not the only tool of communication! But if you were to apply at Loreal for a job or plan to take the civil services exam or choose to write in publications where your work will be read by a substantial number of people then you need to speak in this language & speak very well. You must be decently eloquent.
I love this language. I also love Urdu. These are the two languages I speak. As a writer and a lecturer, I love to express myself in English. It’s become my home. It’s taught me so many things because most of the international content/ literature is in English. Scientific and literary work is in English. Children are expected to speak English in schools and if you have been to a non-private institution, chances are you struggle with this language.
So many people feel not at home with English, so many people feel uncomfortable. I’ve seen that so much that I finally started my own language institution where I help people in 1:1 and group programs. I especially help people with finding confidence and conviction within them to speak their hearts out. I help my clients with finding their voice and give them the framework & the tools to speak authentically. No superficiality. I show them how to be themselves and have an impeccable expression that is unique to them! I make personalized programs for people and expose them to this language which helps them save years of reading (which I myself did, that’s how I learned English growing up because reading and being exposed to the language through other mediums is pretty much the only way to learn it and call it your own). But isn’t that amazing, that you won’t have to read 1000 books or watch 20000 movies to learn and refine your English?!
Hence if you’re someone who struggles and if it’s embarrassing in any way and let me tell you this: you’ve got nothing to be embarrassed about. English is just another language.
