What is Dyslexia?
In the most basic sense dyslexia is an unexpected difficulty in learning to read, write and spell. There are various definitions of dyslexia, as no two dyslexics have exactly the same difficulties.
Some of the common characteristics of dyslexia would be late developer (talking or walking), a discrepancy between the intelligence of the child and his/her language skills i.e. reading, writing or spellings. Some dyslexics seem to be clumsy and/or distracted. Telling the correct time or direction can also be difficult for some dyslexics. Reversal of letters is normal till age four, but if it persists along with reversal of words and phrases then it is a sign of dyslexia. Apart from these, there are many more signs, though not every dyslexic has all of them.
During learning the three steps are taking in information, processing this information and demonstrating what has been understood. In dyslexia the processing step is cluttered so to speak. The sub steps in this step are analysis, synthesis, sequence and check. For a dyslexic the wiring of one or more of these sub steps is different from a non dyslexic, thus causing a delay in learning. The brain also controls the retrieval of information as well as the motor skills of the body. For some dyslexics the wiring pertaining to one or both these skills are jumbled, so there will be chaos if the child tries to use these skills. If a child has wiring for short-term memory mixed up, he will have difficulty remembering sounds of letters or instructions concluding in daydreaming.
Dyslexia does not have to do with intelligence; instead the brain is wired differently in comparison to a non-dyslexic brain which at times gives a dyslexic a better understanding of visual and spatial data. Dyslexia is not a disease, nor is it contagious, but it has been proven to be hereditary.
In spite of the inherited jumbled wiring, there is a chance to straighten it up. There is evidence suggesting that if a dyslexic gets remediation by age six the jumbled wiring could change to match a non-dyslexic’s. That having been suggested, at the very least the child will learn to effectively manage the chaos in the brain quicker at a younger age rather than at a higher level.
Taking Einstein’s example, at times dyslexics are great mathematicians, or can be great artists like Leonardo de Vinci. Some may be exceptional at writing, but due to their memory retrieval wiring jumbled, have difficulty recalling the data. A famous writer Agatha Christie was also dyslexic. These examples prove that when a dyslexic child is given help tailored to his/her needs they can master any field.
