The BS Third Year students of the Department of Criminology at the University of Karachi visited the City Court Karachi today as part of their internship program. The visit was led by Course Leader Dr. Yaqub Arshad, who briefed the students on the basic structure and practical operation of the judicial system. During the visit, students explored the main Court Library of the Karachi Bar Association (KBA) and the Judges’ Library, where they received detailed information about various legal books, research materials, lawyers’ working methods, and the importance of court proceedings. The students showed great interest in the bar’s environment, its transparent system, and the extensive legal literature. Special approval, coordination, and arrangements for this educational visit were coordinated by Advocate Rao Irshad Suleman, a respected alumnus of the Department of Criminology. He currently holds a prominent position in Karachi’s legal community, and his role in introducing students to practical law was highly appreciated. Advocate Rao Irshad Suleman also delivered an insightful talk to the students on the judicial system, court ethics, professional responsibilities, and real-life experiences, which the students greatly valued. At the end of the visit, the students remarked that this experience was not only an excellent learning opportunity but also a milestone in helping them understand the future practical needs of the legal field and criminology.

A session on Fundraising for social activities under the environmental club was held at the Criminology Department, Karachi University.
Fundraising promotes a collective effort toward a shared goal, enhancing camaraderie. Students learn to take the initiative, organize events, manage resources, and address challenges. It fosters a sense of ownership and accountability, essential life skills for the future. Budgeting, marketing, time management, and strategic planning are all integral to a successful fundraiser. Students learned how to approach formal and informal donors successfully.

A session on “the impact of environmental hazards on personal health and immediate environment” was held at the Criminology Department of Karachi University for the members of the Environmental Club.
The following points were discussed in detail to set a line of action to run the club accordingly.
Air pollution can cause or worsen asthma, bronchitis, and other lung diseases. Contaminated water sources lead to diseases like cholera, dysentery, and hepatitis A, and Heavy metals like lead and mercury in water can cause long-term neurological damage.
Exposure to chemicals can cause rashes, burns, and eye damage.
Living in areas with ongoing environmental hazards can increase stress, anxiety, and depression.
Prolonged exposure to toxic chemicals, radiation, or polluted air and water can increase cancer risks and contribute to birth defects or developmental issues in children.
Spilled chemicals and pesticides degrade soil quality, reducing agricultural productivity and affecting food safety. Polluted rivers and lakes kill fish, reduce biodiversity, and damage ecosystems.
Environmental degradation from mining, urban sprawl, or industrial activity destroys habitats, leading to species extinction.
Greenhouse gas emissions from factories, vehicles, and agriculture contribute to global warming, affecting weather patterns, sea levels, and ecosystems globally and locally.
Deforestation and urban development increase the risks of floods, landslides, and droughts, directly impacting the local environment and community resilience.

To support the formation of "an Environmental Club" in the Criminology Department of Karachi University, an awareness session on pollution, its impacts, suggestions for mitigating its effects, and precautionary measures was conducted.
Pollution is the harmful substances or products infused into the environment by our carelessness. It affects air, water, soil, and even noise levels, leading to various detrimental effects on health, ecosystems,
Air pollution causes respiratory issues, cardiovascular diseases, and even cancer. It contributes to acid rain, smog, and climate change. Polluted habitats can cause species extinction.
Water pollution leads to diseases like cholera, diarrhea, and poisoning from heavy metals. Water bodies suffer from eutrophication and aquatic life destruction.
Noise pollution leads to stress, hearing loss, and sleep disturbances.
Soil pollution impacts crop productivity and contaminates food. Animals frequently ingest plastic or toxic waste, resulting in injury or death.
Session participants were informed about the following solutions to combat the pollution challenge.
Enforce strict regulations on industrial emissions and waste disposal.
Promote and invest in renewable energy sources.
Improve public transport to reduce vehicle emissions.
Reduce, reuse, recycle to manage waste efficiently.
Use eco-friendly products and avoid single-use plastics.
Conserve energy and water at home and work.
Develop cleaner technologies and pollution control devices.
Support innovation in green infrastructure and sustainable farming.
